Sorry, but I think your friend must be confused. Most condos and apartments have their own thermostats.
It's true that Canadian radio stations and tv must have a 'minimum' of Canadian content they must play - but that's not too hard for radio with the large number "Canadian" bands/stars...

As for direct tv being illegal - I can't really comment on it's legality, but I know a large number of people that use it and have never heard of a fine or penalty.

I commented on how hot it was inside and she said that in most of the buildings ( not houses) the climate is not controlled by the individual owners.

She also informed us that the Canadian government only allows a certain number of minutes of non Canadian music on the radio and has other limitations on television broadcasts. Apparently the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission through the Broadcasting Act of Canada requires this "censorship".

I found it odd & asked the owner of the company ( who is an attorney) about it and was told that if you are caught for example with a US based dish from Direct TV there are hefty penalties. i.e. it's illegal.

Too many people controlling / limiting access for me to feel comfortable. I'm not slamming Canadian's ... Aside from Mark, I find them to be likable people. And the country is simply gorgeous.

I just find there to be a pervasive apathy that makes me feel somewhat depressed & trapped.

And trust me .. I know there are plenty of things wrong with the USA & Mexico ... so feel free to pick away.
