Actually in some cases, more guns means less crime.

Places that have boosted carry permits have seen a drop in crime.

My dad had some asshat about 30 attack him in a parking lot, he would have continued attacking him if not for the S&W pointing at him. My dad is 74 years old.

I think the difference is a racial/societal one.

If you took the inner city black youths from the U.S. and shipped them all to Europe, then you would see what would happen.

It's a sad situation for sure. The govt. here has tried to address it by throwing money at it since the 1960's. But it can't change the cultural environment that a lot of black kids in big cities grow up in.

A lot of them grow up romanticizing being a gangbanger. And then when they become teenagers...that's what they do.

I've seen statistics on guns and violence...and the vast majority is "black on black" violence and it's done with handguns.

Take away the guns, and those gangs will use knives, chains, etc.

They are hellbent on killing each other.

I personally think that a lot of it has to do with the "Drug War".

It's just like the Alcohol Prohibition that brought all that violence down then and made gangs incredibly rich.

Only this time, instead of Italian mobsters in Chicago...it's black youth in Chicago.

Seems we never learn from history.

It would be the same with coke and other drugs too.

Then the police could actually go back to arresting people when they commit a "real" crime like stealing, killing, or raping.

All this "drug war" has led to is stealing and killing in such numbers that it's overwhelming. And that in turn has led to even more loss of our rights as cops are setting up "stings", frisking people on the streets, searching our cars, our women's purses, etc.

The whole goddamn thing is spiraling out of control.

And yet after all these decades? Drug use is UP.

It's insanity in my mind.

It's because the war on drugs is big business.. With out the war on drugs, police depts wouldn't get those big property seizures for cities and states. The defense contractors would be selling all those cool new tools to the cops. For profit prisons wouldn't be able to keep their prisons at 95% min occupancy.

There is just as much money at play on the fight against as there is on the supply side of drugs. States and local govt's don't want to give up that money. Perhaps that's why they are ratcheting up the war on terror with local police forces to replace the lost income when drugs are finally legalized.

With out a drug war it means less cops on the street and no one wants that, so unless there is a reason to keep the cops on the street drugs will stay illegal.

When you got the site that published this study and scroll down it shows a lot of info on the top 25 conservative and liberal cities. To me the big, glaring differences (and I think it accounts for much of the crime difference) is the difference in poverty level in those cities.

The conservatives cities have an average of 12.252% of their population at or below the poverty line. In the liberal cities that number jumps to 22.252%. So there are nearly twice as many poor people living in the liberal cities as the conservatives cites. Poverty breeds self destruction and crime.

I have a feeling these crime statistics have a little more to do with economic situation than political ideology.
