Is it a buffet where they seat you and do nothing else? If so don't tip them more then some spare change.

I would leave a 15% tip, even if it is a buffet. Sure, you have to fetch your own food, but the server cleans off your dirty plates, fills up your water, and gets you your beer and coffee.

The usual bill for me comes up to about 20$, so giving a 3$ tip doesn't hurt, a little more if she's cute and real friendly.

Sorry I had to reply to this one. Since I worked as a waitress for years I though that you guys should have a waitresses opinion. You should always tip your waitress. Even if you eat the buffet you need to tip, because they still have to keep you drink full and clean your table and you have to remember that he/she is not even making minimum wage. I only made $2.13 an hour when I was a waitress. So you can always leave at least a dollar.

I agree with VOX, maybe it's a Montrealer thing but I wouldn't dare leave less than 15%. Even if it's a buffet. Besides in our province, the waiters/waitresses/bartenders and anyone else servicing in the restaurant business is taxed on the income, whether you tip them or you don't.

I remember when I was in Europe, we left like $15.00 tip on a $60.00 meal and the entire staff came out to great us and shake our hand. Now that's appreciation!!!

Hrmm, I'm from montreal too, and waitresses -EXPECT- 15%, don't dare to come back again if you leave under that ;)

Also.. about europe.. ain't the tip included in the bill (what a scam.. they decide the %..) already? so if you left 15$ it means you left 15$ over the regular tip? :P (At least I think its like that in France)

Maybe in France, but not in Italy. At least, not where we went. My hubby told me that it's not customary for them to leave tips. Only the fanciest restaurants expect that you leave a tip.

I hate countries where you're expected to tip everyone. Fuck that. The onus should be on the employer, not the customer, to ensure staff are paid a wage they can live on.

I was taught that you don't tip unless you get table service (food ordered at the table and delivered there). However, in reality, I see some buffet places where you are served drinks, and they bus your table for you. These are low-pay people: I think it's only civil to tip them something. How much? How much did they do for you, and did they do it with courtesy?

Usually about 15%, if paying with credit, I usually round up to an even number.

                                  Say it's about $12.73. I'll give them a tip of $2.27 or $1.27 so my card's charged at $14 or 15.

I am a server for now (until I complete my online empire) and I find alot of people thing that servers make minimum wage and its simply not true. I get a check every two weeks for less than 20.00usd - these people depend on tips to live. You should tip accordingly in my book - 10-15%.

yeah, living in Las Vegas im familiar with buffets. You have no need to tip, though if you like a buck or two to the person who gets your drinks.

Having worked so many years in the restaurant business and the casino industry, I'm a very generous tipper, but also a very picky tipper...If I get excellent service, I go out of my way to tip well...if I get shit service I'llleave a small tip or none at all...on buffets, if they get rid of the empty plates quickly and my coffee cup or glass stay full, I usually do $1-2 per person at the table, a bit mroe for higher end buffets...with high service restaurants, I'm a 20-25% tipper and have been known to go to even 30% if my service is outstanding...

oddly, I'm a bit more stingy with tipping strippers though....

Tipping well is almost part of being a Las Vegan though...only in Las Vegas do valet drivers make what mid-level executives make in other cities...

Paying 15% is standard, but I don't remember the last time I paid that. If I pay $20 for a meal, I have no problem laying down $5 as a tip. Treat them well this time and next time they'll treat you like a king.
