If you just starting riding bikes, count in the equipment next to the bike price. It's very important, thus don't leave it aside and by equipment I don't mean just a helmet.

I have a friend who races on dirt tracks, and has for probably more years than i've been alive, has a good size collection of bikes but tells me his 80's bmw (the model escapes me) is his daily rider and that he's never needed an upgrade from that ever.
