Not necessarily, there's a lot of factors to look at.
I'd be looking at the ones that have the best development teams behind them and the ones that have more features and potential than Bitcoin. Also the difficulty rate of mining each specific coin is important as an indication of the strength of the network.
Litecoin is popular because it's 4 times faster than Bitcoin but there are others than offer better features than Litecoin. Right now all the alt coins are rocketing in value so do a bit of reading and make a choice.
At some point in the future these other alt coins are going to end up on the other major exchanges i.e. Mt Gox, Bitstamp & BTCchina when that happens the market capitalisation of those other coins is going to go up fast!
Another factor to take on board is all the other alt coins are in a bigger speculative bubble than Bitcoin, at least with Bitcoin it's got the infrastructure being put in place with the likes of Bitpay and a few other payment processors to take payments.
The other alt coins have no payment processors and very little infrastructure, they're probably 1 or 2 years behind Bitcoin but then again you could argue with a faster market capitalisation than Bitcoin they'll probably have the infrastructure faster than it took Bitcoin to get to that point.
