judging by the success of some circles, the potential to make some money is there.
but as "foreigners" we do have to play to their taste and style: lighting, characters, subject matter, and an incredible attention to details!
Japanese culture is very detail oriented--from a tea ceremony to warping a gift, a certain level of perfection is always present... and their 3D animations are no different, hence a level of quality the rest of the world would have a hard time coughing up.
if you can match Umemaro's level of quality, you might be golden.
i'd sure love to see some of your work, and maybe collaborate on a few projects for the East... at the very least i could help you avoid some of the pitfalls i had to crawl out of.
as for the pirates... we're fucked! it seems there is nothing anybody can do about that.
soon as a product is released on the market some punks buy it and give it away for free just to sell a few banner adds... or to be loved.
DLsite offers some kind of digital copy protection, but we all know there is no lock that can't be picked online.
a combination of selling stuff on DLsite and your own paysite might alleviate this problem, because all the free copies become highly targeted advertisements for your paysite, and all the pirates become your little bitches advertising your site for free... well, maybe not exactly free, but at least you wouldn't have to pay for advertising.
