It may come as a surprise to you...but not everyone defines marriage strictly in the christian terms you do.
For starters - my wife and I weren't married in a church. We were married by a Supreme Court of Canada justice in the beautiful gardens of his home. Ours was a secular civil ceremony.
My wife and I view marriage as symbolic of our commitment not only to ourselves, but also our children.
Notions of christianity and religion weren't even a consideration.
