Actually, the country's slang name is considered offensive to many South Americans as they are "americans" too ...

We refer to the United Kingdom as the UK.
Historically, they were called England but I am sure the Scots and Welsh would have something to say about that ...
I'll defer to someone from the UK on further explanation of that one ;)
