Resession? Probably bits and pieces.. if it weren't for content theft, I'd think we might not even notice a recession - people still entertain themselves during a recession, and a $30/month membership is a lot cheaper than even one night on the town - whether you already have a member of the opposite sex secured, or no. I say the current problems of content theft get multiplied, though, and tip the scales to work against us... I think having less cash could prompt Mr. Joe-Average to further justify his journey into the bitch-ass world of partaking of stolen content.
Depression... that'd probably be a lot worse. I think we'll be the first to feel the brunt of an actual "depression," because I assume reputable/ignorant (in regards to content theft) people would give up their porn - and go back to using their imagination and mental "yank-banks" to get the job done before selling their dining room sets.-D.

To really answer the question you'd want to look at porn consumption in 2001, 1991, 1980-82 and maybe even 1974. But what will you look at? Sales for public porn companies? I don't think how Playboy fared in the recession of 1991 would be a very good proxy for onlines sales in a 2008 recession.
How different was the early 80s recession with an 11% unemployment rate from the short, quick recession of 2001? Like Baddog pointed out it depends on what choices people are forced to make. And then you have unemployment which can take even those choices away. Not a lot of savers out there ready for unemplyment.

No its not a good indicator because they werent giving porn away in the 80's and 91.To really answer the question you'd want to look at porn consumption in 2001, 1991, 1980-82 and maybe even 1974. I disagree. If you find that porn sales decreased during those recessions you'd have a pretty good indicator. Only if sales increased or stayed the same do you have the more complex situation.
Though I don't think there is enough data on porn sales available from those recessions to matter anyway.

people need to escape from reality, porn helps with that
when there's a recession/depression people still need to escape from reality, generally even moreso than before
personally I don't think porn will ever die, it might morph into a different delivery model but I doubt it will ever go away, cos especially during the roughest times, people will always need to fantasize and seek to escape their day-to-day drudgery/misery/stress
besides.. it's cheaper to rent a porno (or subscribe to a paysite) and bang your chick on the couch (or the dining room, kitchen or wherever) than it is to go out to dinner and a movie

Since I only know the webcam biz (and just barely), and haven't been through a recession, I don't have much practical insight. However, I would guesstimate that the "consumption" will stay about the same for hardcore users (addicts) but for the mid-range and light users they will perhaps make smarter choices.
For example, I am already noticing lower average purchase amounts (for cam sites, of course) but overall the number of sales is fairly steady. That could just be coincidental but I will monitor in the coming months just for curiosity.Comment

There are stats the prove this ..perfect example .. up here in Canada .. welfare comes on the last wednesday of every month .. coincidently the busiest day in the bars across the landNo sig .. just meComment

I agree, but in very hard times (depression) I think people will cut back on internet access before things like cable. No internet, no porn.Comment

The first 14 yrs of my experience in adult was in bricks and mortar. If people wanted to porn it had to be bought there was no other option. Now there is free porn thats just a click away. How can you think that wont change the matrix? All things are not equal.I disagree. If you find that porn sales decreased during those recessions you'd have a pretty good indicator. It wouldnt be a indicator because the playing field is different. There was no free porn back then unless you wanted to try and watch the playboy channel scrambled. Since there was no free porn, porn never got hit hard and thats why people say the adult industry is recession proof but that was a time before you could watch 30 min scenes for free.Comment

I think we will be fine. There will be plenty of people with jobs still, they just curb spending, but mostly on big ticket items. People don't buy big screen TVs and cars and vacations, they do buy CDs and DVDs and stuff like that. There is no reason to think that just because there is a recession, guys will want to stop pounding their meat. There is a lot of free stuff out there, but people will still pay if you offer them something they really want to see. Also if so many people stop paying for anything and just visit tube sites, the tube sites sales will disappear and they will no longer be able to afford to keep the site up.
If it is a major recession like 20% unemployment and stuff like that, then it could effect us, but we are trully a global market and there are more and more ways to make sales to people from other countries.
In the end when times are tough people want a diversion to take their mind off the troubles. what better diversion is there than hot naked girls?Comment

How does this counter my case where you look into the data of the past and discover that porn actually DID go into a recession along with other industries in the past? The difficulty with the initial assumption that it is (or was) recession-proof is that some of have heard it for so long we assumed it was true in the past just based on the statement. How many of us have been through even the last two recessions as business owners? Even if so how relevant would those limited experiences be? Phone text? Store owner? Whate would even qualify as related? It wouldnt be a indicator because the playing field is different. There was no free porn back then unless you wanted to try and watch the playboy channel scrambled. Since there was no free porn, porn never got hit hard and thats why people say the adult industry is recession proof but that was a time before you could watch 30 min scenes for free.
Who has dug up the SEC reports of Playboy from 1970 to the present even to initially and tentatively verify the assumption? I think that is the only data even possibly available.
I'm having a difficult time believing that some consulting firm put together evidence after the '74 recession that porn was a "recession proof business".
You could do this pretty easy for alcohol or cigarettes but porn is gonna be really tough.
Again i will repeat. I think if you find in the best case that porn was in a recession similar to other industries in the past we will go into an industry-recession this time. The point YOU'VE made only enhances that. With the option to move to more free porn the industry will be hit even harder than then.
I make ZERO claim to actually knowing how the industry handled recession overall in say 74 or 80. Did people buy more or less porn then? Not a clue.Last edited by ADL Colin; 03-14-2008, 02:58 PM.

unfortunately they arent buying memebership. eg. NScash provides customer country details and jugging from more then 150 SUs I can say 90% of customers are still from US, despite the fact that memberships are cheaper for EU folks more then ever.Comment

Agreed there. That and we have to take the possibility of a worldwide recession seriously. There's certainly concern in the UK. It's difficult to imagine a long US recession not causing a number of regional recessions or maybe even a truly global one.
How deep, no one knows.

US global consumption is still the most important thing for global economy.
And for sure ChinIndia isnt going to save rest of world economy. Both countries are already feeling US recession and it just started.Comment

With so much given away for free people will choose to spend their money on other stuff. Porn sites with the personal touch will weather the storm better because there's more of an emotional payoff that people can't get from free porn but really need/want more when times are bad.
After 9/11 camgirls were BUSY!Comment

And I'll bet dating sites will continue to do really well, too.Comment

You got some stats to back that up? I think most European countries do more business with each other than with the USA. Especially now, when the dollar is that weak European companies look out for other markets because exporting to the States is not worth it.Comment
-
Maybe paysites should mention that on their signup sites because I do not think that many European surfers really realize that or think about it that $30 is actually less than ?20 when they have their dick in the other hand.Comment

When the USA stops throwing Trillions of dollars down the toilet in the middle east - then we'll be out of this recession.
Let's just hope John McCain doesn't get in - cause if he does we're fucked.
