But regardless of if it's true or not, your point seems rather lame in light of the greater scope of the discussion. Your comment comes off like you are justifying putting a fetus at risk by smoking simply because other things can or may also have the same effect.

I'm going to hazard a guess that the chances of such things negatively affecting an unborn child due to smoking far outnumber instances of the same effect from riding in a car.

Looking forward to seeing some actual proof of what you just said though.

I've saw plenty of stupid sluts like that around here. They're usually about 16 years old too...

          Disgusts me

But then again if they wanna do it what are you gonna do against it? I know a girl who stopped and the minute she gave birth started again. Maybe thats not as bad but that kid is gonna be raised in an appartment with 2 ppl smoking 24/7. Same deal.

Still wonders me how ppl here in Europe think smoking is some kinda privilage and you just have to deal with it.

Gonna be fun after July 1st when we ban smoking from restaurants completely here.

How exactly is this "thinking outside the box"?

You still aren't providing anything other than your word by way of proof.

However, seatbelt wearing in accidents I can see, and yes I've heard of that being discussed. But it in no way compares to the MILLIONS of people who smoke while pregnant or smoke near their wife while she's pregnant or smoke in the same house as their kids, nor does it compare to the effects of such behavior on the unborn.

The seatbelt argument is a rare occurance, and unless an accident takes place there is very little risk that I can see, whereas smoking is a KNOWN guarantee of having negative impacts on the fetus.

Remind me what the point was of arguing with me on this? If you can't see that what I said is 100% right and the information I quoted is credible and that smoking while pregnant is a very stupid thing to do, then by all means go ahead and continue wallowing in ignorance. It's your life. Right?

Okay forget what I said earlier. You're right. Since seatbelt use can sometimes be harmful to the unborn, people may as well smoke while pregnant too. I mean what the hell, right? If you can't beat it, join it.

Great argument. Way to think outside that box.

So smoking while pregnant guarantees your baby will be born premature, or with lung-related problems later in life, or die in utero?

                No, of course not.

It just increases the risks significantly.

I'm not advocating smoking while pregnant at all, but just saying that there are lots of risks during pregnancy which can be avoided. The ferocity of the replies here are unjust without the same for all the other risks.

Pregnant women using cell phones? Maybe in 10 yrs you'll be saying the same thing about them, cos studies are coming out implicating high energy waves with congenital defects.

I wasn't arguing with you, nor was I disagreeing with you - I simply pointed out your points for wanting pregnant smokers locking up are equally viable for other things. Don't see how that makes me ignorant.

Your previous two posts very much appear to be to the contrary, but thanks for clearing up the confusion.

Agreed, but just because they exist that doesn't mean that this one (smoking) can't be eliminated from the equation.

I see what you're saying but I simply disagree with it. For one, smoking is a selfish self-serving "fuck everyone around me" habit at the best of times, but exponentially-so when done while pregnant. At least that's the way most people perceive it as is evident in the replies in this thread. It's also one of the leading major causes of infant death, complications during birth, and ongoing health problems of children.

And it's easily minimized or eliminated simply by putting down the smokes.

Possibly I will be saying it. But I still don't see it in the same light as smoking (or drinking, or both) while pregnant. As with the seatbelt example, those are all external things that are although preventable are also things that are part of a normal day in most people's lives. Whereas smoking, drinking etc, are out and out poisoning one's unborn child.

Btw, there's a reason that so many kids suffer from asthsma these days. Back when I played hockey as a kid I recall one guy out of over 300 kids trying out that had it. Nowadays it's more like 1 kid in 20 that suffers from it.

Why even present an argument that remotely smacks of defending this? I for one and glad to see that so many people in this thread take a fucking hard line against this kind of shitty behavior. A fetus is basically at the mercy of how a mother chooses to treat her body, damn straight I'm free to criticize her for holding her kid hostage while she indulges her how filthy habit at her own child's expense.

Maybe women who smoke while pregnant should try thinking outside the box.

I find it disgusting! I have seen video shown on National television of how an unborn baby spasms every time the smoking mother inhales!

I have 3 children to 2 different women! Neither of them smoked. drank alcohol or took any drugs during their pregnancy!

Also Kitty had a total drug free child birth. No anasthetic, no Pethadine, totally drug free!

I know how hard it is to quit smoking. I've been working on quitting for over 10 years and still smoke today. The phisical and mental cravings can get the best of people some times.

I do not condone a pregnant woman smoking, but, If a woman makes an honest attempt to quit, and she has to "cut down" in the quitting process, that's okay with me.

But we don't know this woman's situation. Perhaps she just found out some bad news? Maybe she's stressed and just having one puff?

It's pathetic to see the mother hurting the baby with her vice...

Bullshit. I "up and quit" the minute I found out I was pregnant as have hundreds of thousands of other mothers.

For those of you who think the fetus is going to go through withdrawal, what do you think is going to happen when the baby is born? Should the mother keep blowing smoke down its lungs to keep it filled with nicotine?

We learn things through the years - smoking is one of the things that has been proven to cause problems in a pregnancy. Why take that risk??

It think it's a very stupid thing to do for someone who has made an obvious choice to HAVE a baby (as opposed to aborting it which is by far most commonly done before a woman even starts looking obviously pregant) but I could NEVER support legislation to protect "those who cannot protect themselves" AKA fetuses because it's just a hop skip and a jump from there to outlawing abortion. If smoking is harmful to a fetus and is made illegal, then certainly taking a pill or undergoing a medical procedure which will remove the fetus from you (abortion) would logically also be seen as harmful to the fetus and also be made illegal.

As someone who is 100% certain that I would get an abortion if I ever had a birth control mishap, anything that could possibly restrict that very important choice is simply not acceptable.

                                                I don't think that's true:

I think fetus would technically be a symbiont

                                                  http://dictionary.reference.com/search?r=2&q=symbiote

An organism in a symbiotic relationship. In cases in which a distinction is made between two interacting organisms, the symbiont is the smaller of the two and is always a beneficiary in the relationship, while the larger organism is the host and may or may not derive a benefit.

I get the personal liberty stuff. I personally can never see myself getting an abortion but I am not rushing to go picket outside clinics either. I was really just floating that off my head and I am sure if would never be passed as a law in most countries where abortion is legal simply for the chaos it would cause because of the relation to abortion.

It just feels like at times there should be stupidity fines. Plus, if the baby has related complications when born (and therefore actually alive in any body's book) saying it was 'Mommy's choice' to harm you feels weird to say even if I get the knock on effect/slippery slope argument.

I think its wrong and that she may need extra assistance in stopping however I would not want any new laws.

I also had two smoking parents, smoked during pregnancy and drank some too. Hell I am fairly certain most everyone did. Still can recall smoking in the hospital, seeing doctors smoke, and many smoke filled cars with crappy triangle side windows. Then again they also did pot too and I know I ate my parents only joint on my first birthday, was stoned to high hell when we went to my grandparents. Pictures are funny as hell, specially what I did to that poor cake. (yes bad parents, bad! bad! bad!)

None of my medical issues are even remotely associated with them smoking for first few years of my life, before anyone brings that up or associates it.

Oddly I did not start smoking until I was 22, and did not really get drunk until I was 21. Experimented with drugs (pot) a few times from age 11 to 18 and really did not start using it much until 25 when suggested to by a doctor.

I know it can cause serious issues with children. I also think it has been way over blown. Personally I would never condone it and I would encourage any soon to be or current parent to not smoke (anything) while expecting or around children. Even if I feel it has been over blown and exaggerated, I do not think it is worth the potential risk. About the only thing I could condone is a glass of wine, which studies say could be helpful.

Smoking is it not a sufficient nor a nessecary condition for having birth problems and that's why it's still legel.

Yes there are some stats that has proven some minor and bigger issues regarding smoking under a pregnancie but that's just not enough for everyone to understand.

I am saying this because I had this very dicussion with my gf who is a smoker. (around 10 cigs a day).
She argued that her mother smoker during the 3 pregnancies in their family and all of them are perfectly healthy and one of them even an elite football player. However her mothers sister has three kids all with Astma and they have alwasy had a 100% strict policy against smoking. Both Mom and Father are non smokers and never suffered from Astma themselves.

And this is the very issue here.... 95% of the time it doesn't affect the kid in the long haul but the last 5% of the times it does. Some people are willing to take this risk brushing it off as unlikely. I actually think 5% might be high put btw.

How about not eating nutrtious enough? I think that will affect more than just 5% or so.

She can have a point there... but at the end of the day it's still an extra risk and I would be extremely disappointed to see my gf with a cig in her during pregnancy.

I read a report that in Athens they figured out that it would actually be better for you to sit at home and smoke than to go out jogging because there was so much pollution. Don't light another fucking cigarette.

But let me guess- it was an unplanned pregnancy, right?

I bet her ovaries probably needed time to tell her to go get some birth control.

If it was an "accident" and still wanted her baby, she should have acted like a mother and not like a selfish bitch who prefers to harm his baby than trying to stop smoking.

Always gotta be objective, and not take what is told you as truth.

I never smoked around my wife when she was pregnant, and only smoke around them now as kids when we are outside, but we live in a society where they are exposed to cigarette smoke. And that is what they will have to grow up with. Sure, they get runny noses and ear infections, but well, that's just life for a kid.

Smoking has very bad side effects, but so does alcohol. It wasn't very long ago, massive ad campaigns were warning about the dangers of alcohol. Now very very strong studies show regular drinking of a glass or two a day can be very good for you.
