I say yes. Waching infomercial on FX right now and wow did a shit load of awesome songs come out of that era. I mean seriously. Was it the friendly attitude towards weed during that era? If so I say lets legalize that shit asap, or maybe give prescriptions for musicians. Wet behind the earers might not get it though. Just damn the songs that came out in the 70s...

lol No way. I love 70's music. What era is better if not then? You could argue 50's or 60's due to beatles and Elvis jerry lee lewis bunch of others, but there was an explosion of artists in the 70's. 80's was good, but started going down hill towards the end of it. 90's started to get into copycat stuff and boring same old same old. Dunno my thoughts are 70's were the peak, and not sure we will see same as that era again.

No, but it probably had the biggest number of rock supergroups (Zep, Who, Aerosmith, etc) which is why you might mistaken that it was.

It certainly was one of the best.

Not sure about _the_ best, though.

there was some amazing music that is now 'classic rock' from the 70's - but seriously no decade matches the 70's for the amount of cheesey music and that's not even including disco.

The best era is a personal thing and is usually the era in which your mind woke up to the world and discovered, amongst other things, the music around you. Which is part of why music is so personal. I love music from all eras but I can pretty much tell you that my mind woke up to music in 1986 (when I was 10) because I know every word to pretty much every radio play song that came out that year. The year before I may have been aware of the song when it came out but not consumed by it.

The best 10 year span for music had to be from the mid 70s to the mid 80s. Yes, there was a lot of crap in there, but that is understandable when you think about how many "categories" of music were spawned then.

its all about your personal music preference. For me the 90's are the best since thats the era the most enjoyable hiphop/rap came from in my opinion.

I'm torn. As far as decades go for rock music, the 60's was also an amazing time... onset of the Stones, Beatles at their zenith, the Yardbirds, Hendrix, Joplin, Beach Boys, The Who, the Guess Who, Cream, birth of Led Zep, the Doors, Bowie, the Kinks.... and 100's more, all legends. And WOODSTOCK. My only regret is that I wasn't old enough to partake of the spirit of free love that went hand-in-hand with the music.

But the 70's was where I did all my teen years, and a huge chunk of my favorite tunes came out of that decade. That decade took what was done in the 60's and evolved it into something truly awe-inspiring.

I'll give the final nod to the 70's... by a nose.

70s are really good...though as music grows we can't tell if it is the best among the rest...but it definitely be one of the best...

It was one of the best decades as far as production goes...things started getting pretty hifi and producers actually gave a fuck back then, as opposed to every modern day cookie cutter moronic pro-tools producer.

                                                The 80´s was the worst!

But seem like 00´s are even worst. What´s going on with bands? Now that is so easy to record an album bands produce always same shit.

It´s time for "songs", from each album maybe you can find 2 or 3 good songs, but forget to find a good album. There was a time when discs like "Ok Computer" of Radiohead, "Moon Safari" of Air, or "Different Class" of Pulp used to come in mass every year.

Now seems like everybody is sleeping.

he's right - this decade is near the end and what artists and albums are going to remembered as classics or important in music history? some rap clowns? Kelly Clarkson?

Yes I did have one stolen from me in the 2000's this is true.

Anyways I love 80's music and 90's and 60's and even 50's and even a lot today, but 70's was the sweet spot for me I think.

The '50's was the spawning ground for all the popular music that followed. Country & western, folk, jazz, R&B, and rock & roll all evolved after WWII and formed the base of today's music.

The 60's was when new technologies like multitrack recording and stereo players were really developed and made widely available.

The 70's put the stylistic influences and technology together to create the songs that are still some of the most popular recordings today.

You said it. If you happen to turn on any music awards shows you see guys like the "George Bush doesn't like black people" guy winning all the awards. I seriously don't remember what his name is or the name of one song he has done.

Music has turned to trash the last 10 years or so, and the only "new" music I listen to seems to come from bands that I was already listening to 15 to 20 years ago.

And I know it's not just me, my kids seem to listen to the older stuff too.

The "MTV 80's" I think frankly sucked and did more damage to real music than it did good for "televised music-based performances". (Kinda like processed cheese food products - ie: american cheese). Sure there were some decent mtv released songs. A few. And sure, the established rock bands who released video's because you HAD to back then was nice to see.

Do you think Steely Dan would have ever got a contract if it was based on their TV appearance? They were ugly! (I'm SORRY, but come on!).

I still find myself listening to Blizzard of Oz every other day or so. Such great guitar work and all that. Not sure if today anyone is producing new tones, riffs, compositions like that. Dont have the energy to comb through imports like back in 1981. And even the "music tv" stations dont play music anymore. bah.

There was some crap pop in those days just like now, but by and large, people still actually sang (no vo-coders and effects that made them sound like aliens) played instruments and wrote songs. The 70s was the beginning of the era when none of that mattered as long as you looked good in the right clothes and had the right haircut.

For me music is always evolving and turning into something different. I don't think I could put my finger on a best era for music. If I absolutely had to I would have to say 90's because that is the era that I grew up in and so the music of that time was the most meaningful to me. But really it all comes down to personal taste.
I think you have to look at music as an evolution and therefore everything that came before is a necessary precursor to what we have today. There are loads of great bands coming out every year still across all genres. And that is where it is really at for me.
Sure there are the songs and albums that I will always come back to but for me I like the listen to new music as much as possible. I guess I like change.
I'm sure one day I will identify with the people who like a certain sound or style and not much beyond. But for now, I can't comprehend it.
I guess ask me when I'm 80 and I could possibly give an accurate answer.
