I agree completely. I used to have a lot of women who just wanted to feel secure, safe etc. Usually after some traumatic event. I was always kinda sad. They just never wanted to hear that they are not going to fight a guy twice their size and enraged and win. Weapons are also a problem in view/opinion. Weapons make people feel safe.. but being in that situation and actually being able to use it its a different story. The only best answer to defense for someone who doesn't want to mix it up and probably get hurt is to do everything possible to avoid situations where that is probable.
It was always interesting to see how hard it is for the average person to even get comfortable with making contact with another person... kicking or punching. Most people can't even get to that point.
