                            I think the difference is most conservatives are happy to call themselves conservatives but liberals shy away from the label. Maybe in the long-run liberals will succeed at turning "conservative" into a slur but they haven't yet.

                            Many liberals are using "progressive" now.

                                I don't get what the constant uproar about Israel. Why are people so concerned whether we support them or not? Sure they're a nice allie but people act like we should be giving their Prime Minister HJ's every week.

                                        Exactly...and the liberals/Democrats of fifty years ago began migrating into the Republican party because they cannot identify with the new liberals (ultra liberals) of today. Mainstream society is still primarily composed of moderates and are more and more becoming Independents as the ultra liberals move into taking more and more control of the Democrat party and ultra conservatives move into taking more and more control of the Republican party.

                                                            You are correct that the Democratic party is not majoratively ultra liberal at this point in time...but it is still moving in that direction...and that is still why some Democrats are still leaving the party to become Independents or Republicans.

                                                            As for the differences between McCain and Hillary...McCain is and always has...basically...been a moderate Republican and Hillary is a somewhat moderate Democrat with ultra liberal leanings. Hillary will be somewhat popular with most liberals of old but will not be very popular with ultra liberals of new and McCain will not be very popular with the true conservatives of the Republican party and certainly not with the ultra conservatives.

                                                            The simple fact is no single person or party can please all of the people and are lucky if they can please half of the people.
