Check in with Barry from X-Lovecam. They have a very good tutorial on webcam modeling. Believe it touches on the systemic part.
As for my two cents. Make certain you do the lighting correctly. Multiple light sources in front of the model, not behind them! And don't go cheap on your internet connection either.
