Sorry, back in the thread. Today was a day of Too Much French.

Mutt - I'm not sure where you posted the pictures - or what exactly the guys were debating - the existance of the procedure of dumping bodies, or the veracity of the location.

The second is easy to debunk: The catacombs are lit, arranged, and there are no wheelbarrows full of bones, or clothes hanging off the skulls [look closely]


For the first point, I'm not sure. I'm struggling to find a reference online of the practice, but it does exist - and I've been told the same by many people. Normally these days, when the bodies are exhumed, they are now cremated, but in certain cemetaries [Cimetare de Montrouge especially] - they still dump bodies. There they literally toss them down a 20m deep shaft.. there's a pile at the bottom.

At the end of the day, the people who are couch explorers can debate and debunk all they want, but they're wrong. Also - the 'catacombs' of france date back to roman times - when they were originally mines for limestone.

The 1700 date comes from 1770, when paris created an organisation to reinforce the quarries, and the tunnels that we know were established, with the first pylon being made in 1777.

Bodies were dumped in there after - because the cemetaries were overflowing ;)

StickyGreen - You're totally right. There's huge amounts of military networks around.

I'm going to push my luck and head back to the abandoned metro tonight and see what I can dig up - there are two levels of tunnels running above each other.. not sure if the australian excuse will work two nights in a row :D

I used to do alot of draining when i was like 15-16, but there just wasn't much to see for really cool stuff around here. went to an abandoned army base known by the local explorers as wonderland a couple times. when i got a little older, me and a buddy had a thing for getting on top of buildings. started with malls, moved to stadiums, after a while we were making our way onto some of the tallest skyscrapers in the city. i finally chickenshitted out when i realized we were eventually going to get caught and charged with trespassing sooner or later...

i'd love to get to the catcombs some day, or some of the more famous sanitariums, that would just be badass...

There's a huge asylum movement in the US. Have a look into it.
I enjoy rooftopping immensely.. never had any problems. Normally if you're older, composed and obviously there for photos, or just bystanding, there's never too many problems.

We got caught enterring the mechanical floors of manulife place once and they quickly escorted us both off the premises. I counted that as a lucky break and never bothered trying to top a corporate owned skyscraper again. but god damn is it a rush after you stroll passed dozens of well dressed businessman, slip into a machine room, rush up a few flights of stairs, across a catwalk or two, and crack a door open onto the top of 30-40 stories and look out over the city...
