    Spiffing on dating sites?

    Hi -

Well. We all know a brand new dating site doesn't automatically start with like 10,000 members. I've worked in the "informercial" and affiliate systems for a long time, and they used to use "spiffs" - sign up under the MLM, and if you get 10 clients, you get a payout - however, the first three were always spiffs, or fake signups.

So, what role do spiffs play in dating sites, if any? With so many dating sites on the 'net, what is it that makes some better than others?

I ask because a client of mine wants to start one up pretty soon, and I'm simply telling him that there's way too much competition and the market is saturated.

    What do you guys think?

What will your friend's dating site offer that the others don't?

If you read the profiles of users on dating sites you'll notice many are not just similar, but identical to others, only the age and location change. If your friend wants to set up a free site, then great, if he wants to make it a pay site, he needs to have a large member base already.

          Hi -

Yes, agreed. I don't know what my client expects to have that will make their stand out. As far as I'm concerned, it's a lost cause already, however their weekly checks to me make sure I at least look in to it, if you know what I mean.

That's the key question to just about every new site, not just dating sites.

I think the problem most "big ideas" is they've been done before.

Glad I'm not your client. What do you 'advise' him to do instead? something unique like a MILF site?

Yes, I would recommend they try something unique. Not just a unique target audience, but a unique approach. Something that "solves a problem." Cookie cutter sites don't offer solutions, other than saving the client lots in development costs.
