    broke my new phone

About 10 days ago I got my first ever smartphone. Today I accidentally dropped it and it landed on the corner shattering the display.

I have insurance, but the insurance isn't active for 30 days so I have to wait about 3 weeks to get a new one. It still works, but it looks like hell.

you would think they would make these things a little tougher.

The funny part is that I ordered a hard case and screen protector, but they haven't gotten here yet. I managed to break it so quickly that nothing I bought to protect it has arrived or gone into action.

You probably just got unlucky. I had no case for my last smartphone, it lasted 2 years and through probably 20 or more hard drops (some of them more like accidentally throwing it on concrete) with just assorted scratches to the plastic part.

Then last month I dropped it maybe 1-2 feet onto a hard surface and the screen shattered. Just a matter of the angle it hits.

Damn Kane! Sorry to hear that. I keep my phone naked, but have been lucky over the years.

Glad you got the insurance, even if it doesn't kick in for another few weeks.

One of the many reasons I prefer simple phones, they do not break like that plus you do not have to be careful that much.

My wife has a model that's supposedly a little more rugged. Just as well as it's been dropped several times. It's already missing the plastic on one of its corners, and the screen has a nice scratch down the middle, but it still works.

I don't hold much hope for my Galaxy Note II if I ever drop it screen-first...

Don't believe the hype. My kid's iPhone got a cracked screen while using one.

The wife and I picked up a pair of GalaxyS4's and she added an otterbox to hers...I keep mine nekkid. I don't like the bulky-ness of the otterbox, though. Too big to put in the pouch I bought for mine. Luckily I'm not really clumsy with the phone (so far) - never dropped my old Motorola Milestone in 4 yrs.

Not to say it can't happen, of course.

Dropped my iPhone 5 not long after getting it drunk one night, landed just right, a little scuff on the corner plastic other than that she's good. Had it since launch and she still looks great. No cover or nothing.

iPhones crack easier than anything.. and when they crack you WILL see it every time you light up the screen. My galaxy s2 I had for years dropped it many times no cracks and then finally I got 1 crack going diagonal across the whole screen and I didn't even know it was there for a day or so.

Mine fell about 2 feet and landed on a hardwood floor. The screen is shattered, it looks like a spiderweb. The phone still works and putting a stick on screen protector over it will likely help it from falling apart any further, but I was shocked at how bad it broke from such a short fall.

My boy was so tough on phones that we got him the Casio Commando (and bought insurance - thankfully). He broke the "unbreakable" screen the first week, then lost the replacement in a lake a month or so later, then broke the third one about 3 months after that.

He's older now and we got him an Iphone and put it in a Life Case - he broke the "unbreakable" case in about 2 months. The odd part is that his iphone hasn't had a case for about 6 months now and he's not dropped it once. Maybe it's because he knows that it's unprotected now and is being more careful....
