If you could, then everyone would. In my experience, no one person or company who does it for a living knows half as much as the bullshit and say they do because if they did they themselves would be ranked in the top three for great keywords and be so rich themselves they couldn't have time to waste on you.

Don't let anyone bullshit you and tell you otherwise. I mean think about it, if you knew the secret to the search engines, why the fuck would you not get your site ranked highly in popular keyword terms and make yourself wealthy beyond your imagination? DUH!

Sure there are people out there who specialize in providing a service that *MAY* help your site rank better but there is no promise you'll be top 20 let alone top 3 with those services on your desired keywords so is it REALLY worth it?

I know a guy who paid $8,000 for SEO and his site only got as high as #16 (page 2) for his main keyword phrase.

I think that if you have half a brain, a few good hours (maybe 20 or so) you could do the research on your own and probably do just as well. Plus you gain the knowledge that is vital to the success of your business, that you can then use on your other websites.

There are many good SEO's out there but I recommend hiring someone full time, internal. You need someone to feel the pressure, understand the goals, and get smacked up side the head when they are slacking.

I am an SEO and I am good. There is a reason why my clients have been with me for years and many wonder why I don't charge more. Your generalizing a whole industry because you know a guy who got burned.

If your looking for a consultant, ask to see their past jobs, talk to their past clients, and evaluate their performance from there.

        Good luck!

Paying an expert in search engine optimization (SEO) to get you top rankings in search engines are definitely worth it in this competitive industry (in my opinion).

Here's a really nice search engine optimization forum with lots of help and resources; highrankings.com/forum/

be practical... if someone could really be that helpful to others.. they would be too busy taking over the world on their own to have the time to give others advice.

All scam, but more than enough fools who fall for it. You cannot blame them for taking advantage of the idiots out there, can you?

                  Hi -

niche25 hit the nail on the head, I think. SEO is a science in of itself. It takes someone who can really study your market, appropriate keywords, and then execute on the advertising of such. There are many different angles that you can take to this, but by far the "best" way is to count on linkbacks. Linkbacks, once established, will generally stick around for quite some time, whereas paid traffic is a pump-and-dump type of thing.

Regardless, researching your own methods will more than likely yield you the best results. Who knows, you might even be able to pick up on a few tricks that no one else uses, thus giving you the advantage that you need.

Nah, SEO's are great. The reason why they don't just make their own site and outrank you is because they usually aren't experts in your niche. What an SEO really does is fix all the dumb mistakes you make that hide your content from searchers. He figures out the best alignment between what you are selling and what people are looking for, and he knows the best techniques for getting Google and others to index your content based on the right keywords.

Recent example: have a customer that makes jewelry, great looking stuff, but they are marketing their stuff as pendants. Nothing wrong with that, except that there's 10x more people looking for "charms" than "pendants" If you've never had anybody do SEO on your site than paying $500 for a snapshot review will do you a ton of good. But, I agree with the poster who said you really need an in-house guy, so you can set goals that matter. When you set goals with a consultant, and it doesn't work out? Sorry Charlie, I guess you need a new consultant. That new consultant has it easy because all he has to do is say "that old SEO fucked your shit up. here, redo everything and fix it"

Depends how much time you have, but you may want to learn a bit about yourself first. If you only need basic SEO work (i.e. your industry is not competitive), then you could do it yourself. If you need more work done, or a higher level of SEO then find a company which knows what they are talking about and hire them.

                          A good resource: highrankings.com

Don't hire a company that will promise you a certain ranking, as they are not google, and don't actually know if they could get you such a ranking!
