We had a pump action shot gun and a rifle on the farm up until Port Arthur, handed them in and never once found ourselves in a situation where we "needed" one. I cannot see any reason why citizens should have them.

A lot of books have been written about the place of racial memory and collective guilt.                                                                                                                   Racial memory is LEARNED. They learn it from their parents, siblings, communities etc. Without anyone to learn it from, they obviously would not learn it

                                                                                                                  As for Jews, the racial memory of their slavery and ostracisation is ingrained in their culture. As you say, they were slaves for a lot longer, and much longer ago. Possibly that is the reason for the difference in how the memory is expressed? I'm not saying I am an expert in the field by any stretch of the imagination but I have read about it, and I have talked about the idea of it with both Germans and Israelis. It exists.
