It's no different than a pro wrestling match. The two sides "fight" in public. The "marks" (fans) cheer for their side.
Afterwards the 2 opponents go out drinking and laughing at the rubes who fall for it every time. And the public is still all fired up over the "fight".

Open up your eyes and stop letting a political party form most of your opinions.

That's what has led to Bush and Obama getting away with anything they wanted to.
