Texas State Senator Wendy Davis is awesome

Meet the Woman Behind the Texas Abortion Filibuster

The story of state senator Wendy Davis' breakout performance on the national stage

With just a few hours left before the end of its legislative session Tuesday, the Texas senate was poised to pass one of the most sweeping abortion-restriction bills in the country, banning the procedure after 20 weeks of pregnancy and potentially forcing the closure of a majority of the state’s abortion clinics. Then a determined woman in pink sneakers brought it all to a halt.

State senator Wendy Davis, a rising Democratic star in Lone Star politics, filibustered the bill into the night and, for the time being, prevented its passage. The legislation is still likely to become law if Republican Governor Rick Perry calls a special session, but through her protest, Davis became a hero for abortion-rights supporters nationwide, drawing 400,000 mentions on Twitter under the hashtag #standwithwendy, according to the social-media company.

Unfazed by the Texas legislature’s strict rules that required her to speak continuously on topic and not sit down, Davis filibustered for about 10 hours. She has a long history of perseverance.

And those fucking republicans tried to say that Wendy wearing a back brace would break the rules of the Filibuster:

    Wendy Davis is awesome.

I live six blocks from the Texas statehouse. You care more than I do.

Not sure which one of us that makes worse!

she's awesome because she filibustered against texas legislation that

banned abortions past twenty weeks of gestation, required doctors performing the procedure to have the right to be able to practice in nearby hospitals, and required that clinics meet the same standards as other health-care facilities in the state

                          that's awesome to canadians?

It would shut down 80 percent of abortion clinics in Texas. There would be nowhere at all to have a legal abortion in West Texas. The sponsor of the bill has stated that rape or incest victims should not be excluded from this legislation (see above clip on her stunning rape kit related reasoning for that). The bill would leave something like five abortion clinics open in the whole of Texas. The twenty weeks is a red herring in what is really an attempt to, in practical terms, ban abortion altogether in Texas.

yeah, i'm really not getting that though, i was borned and raised in south texas and for decades abortion was a non-issue, now it's all the sudden the issue there.
i guess maybe politics brought this issue back up but it appears there is debate on if the legislation would cause the clinics to close. it very well may but this is not the texas politics i am used to.
i've been away for a while though, hopefully never to go back to that shithole state, even austin.

the other thing i don't get is this bill passed right?

Maybe it is an issue now because there are enough pro-choice voices that are willing to be heard? So, when attempts to limit them come up they actually make it an issue. Who knows if that is right, it's the sociologist in me just thinking out loud.

Plus, it is Austin which makes it a bit easier for the more liberal folks to be in the building.

The bill didn't pass because they ran out of time mostly thanks to her. The rules are that for the bill to pass it would have had to been voted on before the end of session which was 11:59 that night. That did not happen.

However, that didn't stop the republicans trying to mislead by having a vote at 12:01 but putting on the State website that it had taken place at 11:59. Something they have now changed. Perhaps after realizing that if you are going to try to commit fraud maybe you should do it when the session isn't being streamed.

When Texas stops their executions then I'll buy into their pro-life position. Until then their just a bunch of hypocritical christian whackos.

Here's a damn good read on the reality of Texas politics, particularly how it relates to the recent SB5 abortion bill.

In reality it's about political power not abortion.
