Yes, very impressive. It takes a strong will to conquer that.
My Dad died at the age of 58; I was 15 years old at the time- cirrhosis of the liver due to acute alcoholism. He drank as you described drinking for most of his life. I don't have very many memories of him in which he didn't have a beer in his hand. The last time I saw him, his skin was totally jaundiced and his eyes were bloodshot, he couldn't keep food down and his thinking wasn't very clear... he still had that beer in his hand. For those that have it, it's a terrible disease... and it hurts almost everyone surrounding you as well.
Good job and I hope you conquer 9 more years!Comment

I was a total hypocrite, yes. I was prosecuting people for doing exactly what I was doing. Until it caught up with me!
I resigned and ran for re-election. The people of Worth County had a lot of faith in me and they voted me back in -- 70% of the popular vote and I won every precinct. I had a few months sober when my resignation and the special election took effect, which helped a lot. This was a small county so everybody knew how fucked up I had been, but they also knew how hard I was working to stay sober and they gave me another chance.
I spent 7 days in jail, paid a $1500 fine, 2 years probation and license revoked for a full year with NO work permit. I can honestly say I never drove during that year.
I think being prosecutED made me a better prosecutOR. I treated everybody fairly and any of that bullshit whining "I can't go to jail!!" made me respond "I went to jail and you can too. Quit whining, suck it up and be a man."ChadKnowsLawComment

More power to you, Congrats!!!:DFebruary 21, 1999 I was arrested for drunk driving in Cerro Gordo County, Iowa. At the time, I was the Elected County Attorney of Worth County, the county just to the north. I was my usual blitzed self that night. My tolerance was so high after 15 years of heavy drinking I passed the walk and turn but failed the breathalyzer -- if you call over .30 failing. College students die at .24. For me to still be able to walk at that level was amazing. I was 185 pounds and had a 37 inch waist. (now I am 160 and 30 inch waist-- back to normal)
The next day I called an in-patient treatment center and reserved a bed. Since I had been prosecuting drunk drivers, I had a good relationship with the manager of the center and was fortunate that they could take me on short notice.
After I checked into the treatment center, the DT's started and lasted for 4 very long days. Withdrawal from severe alcoholism is the most painful thing I have EVER felt in my life.
A day after I got through the DT's, one of the other patients who was also going through them died in the middle of the night. Going to breakfast in the morning, and seeing them wheel his body away on the gurney I realized how serious this really was for me.
I spent a month in that in-patient treatment center. I don't know how else i would have made it- I was craving a drink so bad my mouth watered.
Somehow I made it through the roughest period and stayed sober. I got into Alcoholics Anonymous and have been going ever since.
Every year I post on my Sobriety Anniversary. It helps me to remember how really really fucked up I was and how lucky I was to have been arrested. It took a kick in the ass that hard to get me to sober up.
Friday, February 22 marks 9 years without a drink. It feels damn good to be here, sober, today.Comment

Congrats for sure, my wife struggles with it every day as well. It takes a lot of fortitude to make the day, week, month... let alone almost a decade.

That seems like an extremely harsh sentence for a first time offender.
I would bet it was (at least) your second DUI . . . to get a decision like that.
I know of two time offenders that haven't received sentences as harsh as that.
What aren't you telling us?Comment
