Any advantage to use PayPal for your paysite???

Just curious. I'm not really very familiar with PayPal, but I know when I wanted to make a purchase using PayPal, I had to submit my credit card information.

So, I'm wondering if I should offer the ability for people to subscribe to my site using PayPal in addition to using online CC processors that are already on there.

I'm not sure that I understand what the benefit of offering PayPal is when it requires your credit card anyway. Why wouldn't users just signup using their credit card instead of using their PayPal account?

I'm must be missing something. Please fill me in.

Yes I think more people will join because they will not be afraid of giving away their credit card information

Foe, that's just my point. They have to give out their credit card information one way or the other. Both PayPal AND the CC processors require your credit card, so why would I use PayPal? I'm curious to know why it's used on websites.

Well, someone who has already joined paypal knows they can trust paypal (arguably!).

But yeah, the surfer will feel safe signing up for your site using paypal if he's already using it. So, can't hurt to add the paypal signup option. It can only increase sales.

Lower processing fee = more profit.

Hmmm, thanks guys. So it seems it's just a matter of trust from having used PayPal online before instead of having to submit their credit card information again to another company.

Sometimes I just have to ask to make sure. I don't seem to think like the typical surfer in many respects. I was never interested in getting a PayPal account. If I wanted to subscribe to a site, I'd just sign up to their cc processor.

I only use PayPal because some webmasters prefer to recieve payment that way as do some programmers.

Anyway, thanks for the comments. It won't hurt to add it.

Personally, I really enjoy the paypal debit card. I prefer to deal mostly in CASH, and I hit the atm machine daily to withdraw my sales.

Damn good point. I can't believe I didn't think of it. I have to investigate. While we're here, how much do % do they take. Aww I'll just go to the site and read.

Just goes to show you how ignorant I am. I didn't even know they offered a 'debit card' so to speak. I better look into getting PayPal for my sites.

We've used Paypal for over a year.

                    Never had a fraudulent CC.
                    Much lower processing fees.
No 10% hold back for 6 months.
No limit to what the client can spend or I can transfer.
Never have more than $400 at any one time, usually $200.

Everyone else we looked at wanted 15% + 10 hold back.
                    Maximum order sizes.
Maximum transfer per month, until we proved ourselves.
When that was, was not said.

Yes I heard all the stories.
Bottom line is if they freeze my $400, who cares the other processors steal over $1,000 every month in extra comission plus hold back that more than that, every month for 6 months.

They are VERY careful and this shows in the comission rate they charge and the way they do busines.

Sign up the rest are like sleeping partners in your bank account.

I was going to go with PayPal as a secondary. However, I decided not to have a secondary.. CCBill doesn't decline or go down a lot, and if I have a secondary, then some sales don't earn referral partners any money. I want people to know that if they send me a sale, they get their money.

                            Charly,

Thanks for the info. Is it easily integrated into a paysite format? So, if somebody subscribes using their PayPal account, can PaylPal give them a requested login, transfer that login to your password file on the server (the way the cc processors do) or do you have to manually add users?

Of coarse anything can be programmed. Just wondering if they already have this instant setup already.

Fletch, what happend? Did they rip you off?

I talked to them in Vegas -- I mentioned to them that I saw there was some coding involved to integrate the members area in w/ the password system... they basically told me in Vegas that I could just call them on the phone and they would set it up for me... Fucking awesome ;)

We stuck PayPal as an option to join our members site Teenage Dreams around 6 months ago. We get 4-5 memberships a day using PayPal, in addition to Globill, and Epoch who we use as primary Billing companies

They take a lot less than both Globill and Epoch, and so far 0 problems with chargebacks etc. Certainly worth a try.

PayPal themselevs were very helpfull in setting the system up for us too, so I heartily recommend them

yes - from what i've heard, they are quite good from the company/site perspective. most of the bitching seems to come from end users.

This is the only drawback with them, however, it is worth signing up and using them. I use them to buy content, sell stuff on Ebay, get subscription payments, pay for leased galleries, sell stuff on my content site etc etc. I found the 30 day wait from joining to being able to use them properly no problem, and well worth it.

At the end of the day they are charging me 10% less fees than both Epoch and Globill are! So it pays to use them (or have them as an option!)

So it pays to use them (or have them as an option!)
i use them all the time for smaller one-time payments as well. but something i see limiting it's usefulness on a paysite is this simple fact: if the horny guy that wants into your site isn't already set up with paypal, he mostly like isn't going to to go thru the several day hassle to get set up, then come back to signup.

of course paypal already have a large user base.

I almost forgot. I have a good paypal story.

One day, I was making my regular atm withdrawal with my paypal debit card. The atm machine I went to did not have enough cash in it for my withdrawal. Yet the fucking bank put a "pending transaction" on my paypal balance for the $400 I tried to withdraw. I called the bank and tried to explain to the jackass that answered what had happened. NO, I did not bank with them so of course they did not want to help me. "The money should be credited back right away when that happens," is what the bank guy told me. I told him this was bullshit.

I then proceeded to call paypal. I explained what happened, and the paypal lady proceeded to tell me that the money will be credited back when the bank lets it fall off their system, which could take up to ten fucking business days. I was pissed. I told her that it was my money, and I wanted it now. Today. Her reply was "you have the money, its there, its just on hold." I then said that if the cash was NOT in my hands and on hold, that I did NOT have the money, and that someone ELSE had MY money. Because of some fucking empty atm machine, someone else was going to keep MY money for the next ten days.

She then told me to hold on. As I was on hold, I hit my paypal account. Low and behold the money was there again. It took her about two minutes to completely reverse the atm's pending transaction, and my money was fine. I was amazed, and went back to a different atm and got my cash.

I have never seen such fast and efficient results. I actually think because I apologized to her half way through my bitching that she actually decided to be super nice and do me this little favor, when all along she had the button right in front of her. I thanked her, got her name, and said I would ask for her again if I ever needed to call paypal. Her name is MARY.

I have never received even half of this much courtesy from any bank. I love paypal.

No I do it online with a bank transfer. Do not need the money immediately so it's no problem that it takes 4 days.

And yes you are dead right as soon as it comes in, it goes out. Do you let $1,000s build up before you take it out?

Right, but we are talking about $400-$1,000 absolutely max. IF it ever happens. Those other processors want to take 15% + 10 hold back for 6 months. That is more than $1,000 EVERY month.

We use CCBill for our Strip Kittens procesing but we've had PayPal for our mainstream stuff for a long time and it's great.

I'd love to use Paypal for Strip Kittens but the hurdle I've run into is with our affiliate plan. I don't want to dick our affiliates out of commission if a customer goes with Paypal, but I have no idea how we'd track the sale if it doesn't go through CCBill.

Does anyone know any possible solutions to this? I really would like to have PayPal processing for Strip Kittens.

I would recommend using paypal because you give your sufers more payment options. As far as the CC thing, someone said something about current paypal members. paypal is very convenient and is very popular in the mainstream already.

They have a subscription script that will create username and passwords also. check it out.

Couple of things here and let me preface it by saying that I LIKE Paypal.

However -- Paypal is not a bank, not a cc company, not an anything, yet.

And until they are classified and regulated you run a risk letting any sort of balance build up in there that you wouldn't care about losing.

Next - Paypal has no way to really regulate what people buy with their 'currency' -- thus at least one state government and probably the federal gov't is looking at them hard due to the probability that they are funding online gaming transactions for US citizens, which is illegal in the US.

Next - Paypal's relationship with Mastercard, Visa, etc is tenuous at best given their current setup and inability to insure that their money transfers are not going towards illegitimate activities. If Paypal were to lose its merchant accounts, it might or might not be able to insure that every dime it is holding would be returned to the depositor. My bet is on not, but that's just my opinion.

Next - Ebay's pending purchase of Paypal. It's entirely possible that no matter what Paypal says today, Ebay may very well force them to stop dealing in adult transactions at some point in the near future.

Last -- I would accept Paypal for subscriptions, but I would do it as a secondary option like online checking -- consider it to be something that could increase your profit margin by a good number but don't rely on it to make your business.

I have been accepting Paypal for 4 months or so on my site and have had nothing but excellent results.

I get about a 5 to 1 ratio of paypal versus my other online billers.

I do about 7 paypal transactions a day so its nothing major but I guess as long as there are no chargebacks and you reply fast to customer concerns (which you should do anyways!!) then Paypal has no reason to freeze your accounts. You can even call them and ask about your account rating status..

I've installed paypal script but it isn't writing to password file. I receive confirmations that someone signed up and user receives email, but password file remains unchanged after someone joins. I've changed permissions for password folder and password file without any success.

Isn't this script supposed to write to password file? Any tips on how to fix this?

I have used PayPal for a little over 3 years now. At first they were fine. Now that EBay bought them, I am not so sure anymore.

I sell internet programming on my site. Unless I ship my product via FedX UPS or any other system that has a tracking number, they will not support you if a customer lies and says they did not receive their product.

Since I email my product, I do not ship and have had a few problems. Even when I had verifiable proof through customer support emails from the person who purchased the script.

I am not sure how they are with membership based sites.

                                                                          Hope that helps.

If your going to setup a business account with Paypal, be sure not to give them a credit card, and have _TWO_ bank accounts to deal with them...

One account that paypal has (credit/debit) access to -- this is where you withdraw funds from your paypal account to. And then another seperate account to transfer that money to as soon as you pull it down.

                                                                                  Comment

I am using them for my shopping cart on one of my non-adult (less profit) sites. They have come a long way this year and I can't see not giving them a shot. As long as your careful and don't leave too much money in your account you should be fine.

For a little bit more you can have an offshore adult merchant account, plus have all the flexiblility that you need. Get paid weekly instead for 30 days, and you have no cap, so they can't freeze your account.
