Optimum fixed-width for page design these days?

Working on a few new sites and am curious what the consensus is for optimum page widths at the moment.

I know in an ideal world a responsive theme is the way to go (though often these are flawed in my experience), so humor me on this - more just looking for the current best one-size-fits-all approach rather than tailor-made for individual devices.

I think container between 960 and 980 is good auto center, moreso around 980

by auto center i mean auto margin fixed width and margin 0 auto

I am doing 1000. Google tells me 800 is better. They have a page template for showing you. But 30 percent of people with no money to speak of are at 800.
