Windows 7 and laptop batteries

Well, windows 7 can't manage laptop batteries properly, I guess. On this one it started shutting the computer off after about 30 minutes. After I found out how to make it "do nothing" for critical battery action, it runs for another hour or more of heavy use after it gets to 0%

Then after discharging the battery completely, booting up with the battery out, and then putting the battery in and letting it charge ... everything seemed to get even better

The only thing I found that can fix the eeprom in the battery is completely confusing and I think it requires me to remove a chip from the battery? BE2WORKS or whatever it is

Here is a good question though- if I want to put a new battery in and actually have an accurate battery life meter going for me, what do I have to do? Is there an alternative to the built ACPI control thing?
