A friend of mine who was in 'Nam told me some crazy stories about the region back then. Heroin and opium dens, riding a bus with gunmen on the top so bandits from Burma didn't attack the bus. Lots of women were still topless in a lot of the villages.Comment

best place on earth...i like places where they keep a tight ship and crime is taken care of...singapore is heaven on earth but if you break any law you are pretty much fucked...FUCKED!...car prices are INSANE...BUT im tall and handsome and the average penis in asia is like 10cm and I am at least 2 heads taller than everybody and I am treated like a rock star there by the ladies...singapore girls are rich and hot...well most of them...remember what I said about breaking ANY law...you will get fucked...

My ex is Singaporean. We visited her family there and used to do business there and in Malaysia and Bali. Clean, hi-tech and orderly, but not porn friendly, it's a great place.

Anything really, it's just a place that I seem to keep hearing good things about. Low tax, low crime, low unemployment etc. Just wanted a feel for what the country is actually like.
I prefer asking people that have been/are there, gives you a better idea rather than just reading tourism sites and stuff.Comment

Unless you enjoy draconian laws designed to keep everyone on the government's idea of the straight-and-narrow, I wouldn't recommend moving there if that's what you're implying. The government has really made it success story in terms of business & tech, but at the cost of pretty much bulldozing culture/tradition/personal freedoms.*********

Very clean, organized, good public transport (that runs on time), taxi system that all use the meter, Great for shopping, everyone speaks English, best airport in the world, good nightlife, great food, pretty girls.
But it is a very strict country as others have said. Massive undercover non/uniformed police force and not many smiles in service/retail places you visit.
I enjoy Singapore as a stopover on the way home/to China, but wouldn't like to spend any long length of time there.

Well, while it 'sounds cool' to have been there in 77 - Truth is I was only 8 years old, and on a package holiday with my Parents.
So while I can remember things like the hotel swimming pool had a diving board, and I was allowed to jump off it (I couldn't dive) all the rest of the stuff - I wasn't old enough to be aware of

I watched a documentary how they have some sort of modern slavery with house maids,where house maids once they are hired are not allowed to have a single free day and sleep in corner of house.You can also go to shopping mail and get a house maid there like any other item.Comment

I believe that Singapore-facism is the best system. It is the only ONE country that has AAA credit ratings from all 4 credit agencies, and also has a divorce rate under 30%.
High per capita GDP, high savings rate, low debt, low murder rate, low suicide rate, low divorce rate, secular government, with a focus on practicality and no-nonsense.
Singapore is one of the few sustainable economies in the world.
Singapore's system:
1) Embrace Capitalism. Low taxes, and rated #1 in the world in terms of ease of doing business (least bureaucratic nonsense in permits, licenses, and hiring/firing workers).

2) Impose Moral Order. Death penalty for drug dealers. Homosexuality is illegal. Censorship, with rules stating that TV programs "should not in any way promote, justify or glamorise" homosexuality in any form.

Lee Kuan Yew - who has effectively ruled Singapore for 50 years - takes the practical, realistic view that some ethnicities have higher IQs than others (Chinese smarter than Malays), and that large affirmative action programs would be a waste of money, and would be an inefficient allocation of human resources.Comment

I liked it as a holiday destination but wouldn't want to live there. Sure it's immaculate, pristine and very modern but a bit soul less. not so much character.

I stayed here in April, absolutely amazing hotel, being at the pool on the roof is amazing, sipping on cocktails, watching the sun go down and just relaxing! Singapore is excellent and one of the cleanest cities I have ever been to, the people are friendly as can be and it has a wide variety of things to do. It has all the high end fashion you could ever wish to view or you can go and buy fakes for peanuts.
I was only there 3 days as I was heading to Bali, I already want to go back. If you like to party and drink alcohol it can be quite expensive, if you're on a budget I'd say there are better places to go than Singapore, I didn't mind that much since I wasn't there long but I think a week there would certainly drain the finances pretty fast. We went to a nice little restaurant by the Marina, had a pizza and some sides, food is damn cheap but our bottle of wine was $90, not terrible but the same bottle in a restaurant here would be $45.Comment

I'm going to try and dig a little deeper. I was reading some blurb about "the most happiest" countries in the world, or most happiest cities, and singapore ranked low on a few which was odd. But London and the UK were ranked high, and that can't be right

Was in Singapore last summer. Great city, very clean, very modern. It lacked the authentic vibe though and felt more western rather than Asian. I'd call it a posh city, you can feel the very high standard of living. I was disappointed when looking for souvenirs I couldn't find anything national Singaporean. English is everywhere, even in the subway they announce the stops in English.
If you're there make sure to go to Geylang. It's famous not only for hookers but also for the best Asian food. It's also very cheap, unlike alcohol.Nadya-EuroRevenue

For SE asian standards it's an awesome place to do business or to be an expat.. It's probably one of the best ASEAN places to get PR in..
For tourists it's a cool starting point for getting used to the climate etc, but not really asian..

You can't just move there unless you want to be on a tourist visa and do visa runs all the time. You'd need to setup a company (entrepass) or be married to a Singaporian or make a large investment.Comment

I think you'll find that all the modernization & economic success came at a cost... as a few on here implied, in many ways it's a very repressive place. And with their recent history of internet censorship and longer history of censorship/control in general, as someone in the online adult biz I wouldn't even think of relocating there.
