The stats are based on what each state pays vs what they get back from the federal govt.

New York Obviously pays more in federal taxes each year compared to New Mexico.. Obviously New York will get back more money.

Seriously is that hard to comprehend? Are you saying that it's ok for states to get back more than what they paid? If so why bitch about welfare moms? It's the exact same so why is it ok on the State level but not on the individual level?

Welfare states are negative income states on federal tax dollars. Those extra dollars that are returned to them have to come from somewhere. That somewhere is from the pockets of the states that pay more than they get back.

It's simple math Robbie, why is that so hard to understand?

The Right always bitches about welfare yet they can't even pay their own way on the state level. The bulk of red states aren't paying their own way.

Aren't most major corporate headquarters located in blue states? If corporate taxes are part of the total collected then the blue/red mapping is worthless.

Toyota USA for instance is headquartered in California. When they pay federal taxes does that revenue show up as California's contribution?

Apple pays billions per year they also are based in California. Does their billions get counted as tax revenue from California?

IBM in New York? Etc …….

If what each state pays also includes corporate revenues, and I think it does, this entire argument is foolish.

New Mexico simply gets a tiny 5.6 million dollars per year from the Federal govt. (I deduced that from your stupid Mother Jones stats)

As I said...New Mexico only has 2 million people. Mostly Native American and hispanic. If you really think that a whopping 5.6 million dollars (that those people will never see) is a "Red State on Govt. Welfare" then you and I will never agree.

In my opinion...the Federal govt. does not NEED so much money to begin with. And shouldn't have all this power to take money FROM the people of the 50 states and then use it to extort the States to do their bidding by threatening to withhold "federal funding' (which is actually the people's money that the govt. took to begin with)

I was curious so I had to look this up. New Mexico really does only have 2 million people, LOL. That's roughly 1% of the country. The United States has more than 20 metro areas with a larger population than New Mexico.

I thought socialists would be the first to vote for aid.

But according to Mother Jones...they are THE NUMBER ONE FEDERAL WELFARE STATE!

I see what's happening. It's like the argument when people claim high earners pay less in taxes because they use tax breaks to pay a lower percentage, yet still pay more money. For some reason, in some minds, percentages trump actual dollars.

It's just math based on dollars in and dollars out. The source of the information really should be irrelevant, but whatever.

If you want to get into population and representation then you should join the movement to retool how our senate works. Why should states with millions of people only have 2 senators which is the same as desert states that only have a handful? Oh well, that's how the system works.

Percentage is the way you figure "how much" you pay in taxes. If you want to talk raw dollars, then just say so. But 25% is "more than" 15% in any math book.

Who pays "more"? The person who pays 10% of $100, or the person who pays 10% of $1000?
Not only do they pay the same rate, but in terms of reality the person who holds that 10% more dear is the one who is paying "more" aren't they... well maybe math doesn't really capture the feeling of "more" as well as we used to think.
