whatever happened with the story the media pretty much ignored when that guy set up a video camera and burned himself to death with gasoline at some government building in the mid west as a protest
that was for real and got almost no press, I'm not even sure I remember the story correctly because I couldn't find anything on it (does anyone else remember that?)

I found a story on it, it happened about a year ago, and it was an anti-war suicide protest which some conspiracy theorist might argue may be the reason the story went ignored by the media.
It happened in Chicago.

Mass media and even small town news never likes to carry stories about suicides. They have this thing that it may encourage others to follow suit to get the same attention. One of the few areas that they hold steadfast to, though they should apply it to school shootings as well but fuck that will not happen.Comment

Exactly. This is especially true with high school kids. I went to school with a kid in high school who hung himself. The media didn't acknowledge the story despite it being huge news in the town. I guess back in the 60's and 70's, they'd cover these stories and it would cause copycats looking for attention.Comment

I'm going to guess this is total bullshit. As someone mentioned earlier, if you want to kill yourself, you just do it.
So this is probably either a marketing campaign for some independent film, or a phenomenal internet hoax idea. If the person behind the site was smart, they'd never lead on that it was fake, and on Day 90, they'd just stop posting. No "revelation", no "just kidding", just stop posting. Make people wonder if it was real or not forever. It could go down in history as one of the best viral hoaxes ever.
As a side, I do think Google should pull the blog. I'm not about censorship or anything, but you really don't want copycats. Suicide is a tricky issue, it is viral in itself. Only by idiots. Suicide attempts are stupid, the person is hurting himself and not accomplishing anything.
A smart person who wanted to kill himself would carefully chose the best way to do it, involving minimum pain and maximum chance that it works.
Unless we are talking about spontanous siucides done because your wife and child died in a car crash, in that case you certainly won't think too much and won't plan your suicide for weeks.
But if I wanted to kill myself, I'd really prepare this.
Or I'd go to Switzerland, I heard one of these assisted-suicide centres there can assist you, even if you aren't really ill. (or you just need to fake some documents). But even before going there, I'd consult some other sources to make sure their methods are really 100% efficient and 100% painless.I don't use ICQ anymore.Comment
