    Adult Webmastering 101: Be the master of your own domain

    This is the latest article in my collection of articles aimed at new webmasters from my Adult Webmastering 101 blog that can be found in the resource section of the Max Cash affiliate area.

    ====

    In my role as affiliate support for Max Cash, I have daily conversations with new adult webmasters. On most of those days I will have at least one of them talk to be about how anxious they are about getting into the industry but when they show me what they have been working on it is on a free host.

    Now, it is true that a lot of us that have been in the industry for a long time started with using free hosts but those were very different times. Bandwith was greatly expensive in comparison to today and domains cost many of us $70 to register with the required two year registration. These days you can register seven or more domains for that amount of money.

    However, over the years most of us learned that with all the things that free hosting gave us the one thing we didn't have was control. I am sure there are many that can tell you stories of working hard on a site on a free host and then waking up one morning to finding it had vanished or that suddenly most of the page was a header and footer full of somebody else's banners. Of course, that hosting space wasn't yours and you had no control and no real justification for complaining.

    Just about every business has startup costs and in today's market if you are a new webmaster that is serious about making money in this industry it is important to take control of your own budding empire. You want to always be the one that has the say over what is happening on your pages and while I am not saying anything against current free hosts you just don't have that control unless you are the one paying the bills.

    So, grab yourself a domain and some basic hosting if that is all you can afford to start out with (I am sure there are plenty people here that will be willing to help you with hosting offers) and start as you mean to continue in this industry.

        Great newbie blueprint. So many people starting off trying to enter this industry with no overhead. These days, it's pretty impossible to do so.

          I would have thought there would be some hosting spam in here by now.

            Great post Sarah.

            Just wanted to add something - Stay away from bottom of the barrel cheap hosting. You always get what you pay for and you need at least a basic level of reliability out of your hosting. After all, if you're building galleries you don't want your galleries constantly vanishing and getting dropped from site archives. Building links in archives is great for additional sales months down the road.

              I would like to add, START with your own domains, then LEARN why and how you can use free hosting to your advantage

              there are many upsides to using a free host, but placing your mission critical data is NOT one of them haha

                Exactly..on another board I am getting a bit of flack for saying you should have your own hosting for whatever you won't cry about if it vanishes. Sure, there are ways to use free hosting for the good but in my view it shouldn't replace your hosting. The complaints are about not knowing if there will be profit but starting a biz is a risk and the start up costs in this one are still pretty darn low compared to others.

                  Yup, get the best you can afford at the time but don't fall for unlimited bandwith and that sort of thing. Many have fallen at those hurdles before you.

                            Domains and hosting are both so cheap these days...why not have paid hosting? You can get decent hosting for as little as $3.99/month.

                                    Me too but then things were just so expensive. I can't tell you the number of times I lost things before I gave up with the free hosts.

                                      And me, I spent about six months getting jerked around by freehosts before I wised up. About two months into that, one of the old-timers here (Armed And Hammered I think, maybe Amputate Your Head) gave me Sarah's advice, but of course I ignored it for several more months. Time and effort wasted, in hindsight.

                                        Yup and it isn't about bashing a free host or anything but just showing that it is better to be in control of your main projects.
