Its rare but we have seen this twice. Not sure if you remember it happening to Malarchuck.

Fuck thats horrible I am glad they got him to the hospital in time it will be tough for him to get back on the ice after something like that.

I know its hard to believe he was still standing.

No further word except hes in surgery and they are rushing his wife in via private charter.

You're right. It's VERY surprising this doesn't happen more often. After looking at it, not that this wouldn't have been scary too, but Malarchuk's looks to have been a LOT worse than this one.

It isn't exactly infrequent that a skater has his legs taken out from under him and his skates ARE flailing in the air. Just earlier today I saw a nice candid pic of Dustin Penner falling down with his skates neck high. Let me see if I can find it.

Happened to a buddy of mine when we where playing for our high school team.

Needless to say the next practice, coach had a neck guard for every player.

Friend was fine, the cut was smaller and didn't hit a main artery but we all got pretty freaked out and scared.

NHL is a fast game and it's surprising this kind of accident doesn't happen more.
