Here's a new newsflash:
Drunken fight breaks out at UPAC concert
"A toothless fight broke out Tuesday night on the Student Union stage at the UPAC sponsored country concert.
The group, 10 Gallon Hat, played to a packed crowd in the Student Union ? until the fight broke out.
Alcohol was believed to be the reason the fight began.
?I wish these numbskulls would get it through their heads that Winona State is a dry campus,? Joe Reed , director of the Student Union, said. ?Come on! A week ago we had that whole issue with the Jazio Blaq concert and all these kids bringing in liquor. Now we have this concert!?
The concert, which was open to the public, began at 7 p.m. and after an hour of good, solid country music, the crowd began to get rowdy.
One man, dressed in tight Wranglers, a striped cowboy shirt, a nice cowboy hat and leather cowboy boots, shoved another guy wearing tight Wranglers, cowboy boots and a well-groomed mullet, because the first man thought the second was moving in on his woman.
After a heated argument, Reed intervened to tell the two men to calm down and enjoy the show.
?I thought about kicking them out,? Reed said. ?But, the music was good and everyone else seemed to be having a good time so I thought I would be nice and give them a chance.?
But the fight pursued.
The second man, with the mullet, wouldn?t let the fight drop so he approached the first man from behind and punched him in the head.
Pretty soon, both of the men?s posses joined in, and a big drunken fight ensued.
?I couldn?t believe it,? JimBob Schmidt , the guitarist in the band, said. ?All of a sudden, lots of bottles came out of nowhere and were being broken off with all these redneck hillbillies trying to stab one another.?
?One guy tried to hit another guy with a moonshine jug,? Billy Bob Horton , the band?s drummer, said. ?I felt bad for the guy, but damn, that was funny.?
WSU Campus Security was first to respond to the scene with security guards Nate Greenberg, Riley Stejskal and Carla Corrigan trying to settle down the rowdy crowd. But, the trailer trash Tuesday crowd was too drunk for the three to handle, so they decided to call in personnel with more training.
Within minutes, the Winona Police Department responded to backup the three security guards.
The concert, just like the Jazio Blaq concert a week prior, was ended abruptly.
?It was a good thing that the security guards called us,? Frank Pomeroy , Winona Police Department chief of police, said. ?I have no doubt in my mind that those three students were capable of handling the situation ? but this crowd was too rough. I?m glad they called for backup.?
Pomeroy said that Winona Police confiscated an approximate total of 15 gallons of alcohol. Fifty empty beer bottles were found around the floor, as well as a few cases of beer still full. Also found were full jugs of quality Wabasha, Fillmore and Winona County moonshine, all distilled in the rolling hills of each of the three counties.
Also found scattered around the dance floor were several, bloodied and broken human teeth."
