    Dog Owners: Have any of you hired an obedience trainer for your pooch?

    We've got a little Boxer ('Zango') that is getting a little crazy here. We hired a trainer that will supposedly going to be stopping her from doing all those bad things (like eating the cat shit!, etc.).

    Anyone out there with similar experiences?

      My friend got some sort of boxer terrier mix breed and she got a trainer for him. Worked wonders. Totally worth it if you ask me. That dog was into everything and chewed up everything. Now they are training him to stay and not move and they can walk all the way across the dog park and he just stays till they call him. Almost have him trained to crawl to.

          Boxers are notorious for being rambunctious and hard to train. A trainer will probably be well worth your time.

              I think if you can afford it, why not? A trainer has the knowledge to kickstart your training and give you good information on how to get the results you want. And, it can be the kick in the butt you need to stick with it.

              I think the biggest reason dogs behave badly is because owners tend to be lazy and give up on the training, or not be consistant with it.

                  There is only ONE time to train your pet and that is when they are young. I spent alot of time with my dog when he was a pup and now hes super obedient. If you don't have the time then hire a trainer.

                                                  Ya, this lady that is coming over here, helping with Zango, does that 'whispering' stuff. I was kinda impressed at first when she started doing it, but when I saw that it had zero effect, it just took on a weird light. We'll see how the lessons go.

                                                          I went through 3 months of obedience training with one of my dogs and it was a massive improvement on behavior modification for the dog.. I did not have the dog from puppyhood on, so we had to make alot of changes.. the dog ended up learning alot of stuff and I was able to teach it even more based on the techniques I learned after the classes.. We went 3 times a week for 3 months..

                                                              Ya, the trainer is going to be doing much more than just curbing Zango's craving for crap. In fact, one of the tricks that she's going to be taught is 'ring the bell', which is when she goes up to the door when she needs to go to the bathroom, she rings a bell to let us know she needs to go outside.

                                                              We have a number of tricks we can choose from. I was immediately interested in the 'get a beverage from the fridge' trick, but that seemed more of a parlor trick than something practical. I mean if I am that lazy that I cannot make my way to the fridge for a beer, then I don't need that beer - lol. Besides, do I really want a beer drenched in dog drool?

                                                                  I think such a dog trainer is definitely a good idea. Alternatively, you could start to read and do it yourself, of course.

                                                                      How about this.... exercise to start... when you have an active breed like a boxer, they need at least an HOUR of exercise a day... try getting backpacks you can put weights in when you walk him if you want to tire him out a little more.. Maybe obedience or even agility training as well... working breeds tend to like to be "busy".

                                                                          Yes that was one of the first things I taught my dogs... to "ring the bell". Unfortunately they also take it upon themselves to ring the bell when the CAT wants in or out as well, which, while cute, can mean much more "ringing" in my ears! lol! Training a dog to ring a bell is ridiculously easy. Took my girls a matter of days to learn it.
