I think that's what they missed: to get deep into the psychological motivation to do things, including join a cult, killing people, be ready to die for no reason and everything to be a chapter in a book. I thought they were really doing some cool stuff for the first few episodes -- especially with the trio of cult members. The 2 guys posing as "the gays next door" was really interesting. It's possible the lie would become the truth after 2 years of pretending, and they explored it pretty well. And the gravity of taking a life(for Jason) was made to be a big deal, which it is something you forget when watching shows where people get killed left and right. They made you think it has to be really difficult to stick a knife blade into somebody.
Then it slowly fell apart for me.
I'm going to check out Hannibal this weekend.
as far as new shows go, nothing has been better for me than The Americans. It doesn't hit you over the head with anything and they nailed the feeling of the early 80's.
