The best thing to do in this case is to contact your hosting provider, or, if you own your own machines, contact the data center's NOC and ask them for help. They will be able to provide you with various firewall products and services that
(a) Are instantly available to you, and
(b) They can provide full support for.

We were under attack by a big DDOS back in the days on a site that had a few million page viewed a day. We switched to a few hosts that claimed they could handle it before we found ThePlanet. We never had any problems after that.Originally posted by rayadp05Comment

That's not true. Most hosts will just nullroute you when you're getting ddosed. Very few hosts offer anything like Cisco Guard. Conventional firewalls don't do anything to stop a ddos.
Defeating a ddos takes either a specialized host or a 3rd party mitigation service.I like pie.Comment

If you're being attacked and your server is absolutely vital, you might need to contact Rack911. They are good
You should also investigate what kind of ddos is , how large is it and other useful info BEFORE contact them.

We use webscreen, but it's a physical box and I don't think they have a virtual solution, but it is pretty good and the company that I work for suffers DOS attacks and DDOS attacks quiet often.

Cloud based solutions I know off are Cloudflare and Imperva.... http://www.imperva.com/solutions/ddos-protection.html
A couple of possible solutions:
Mod_Evasive and Mod_QOS... this should limit the amount of requests from specific IPs and may buy you some time.
also I have heard of one way of dealing with it.. never tried it though:
Stick a couple of Virtual Machines and then load balance across a couple of reverse proxies (with caching).. ie Varnish Cache
The theory is that you'll soak up all that bandwidth and stop it saturating your network before it reaches you backend servers..
Good Luck btw.... DDOS protection isn't something you think about till you suffer an attack... but once you have it you'll sleep easier at night.I don't endorse a god damn thing......
