What I find bizarre is the charges of the hospital. As I mentioned previously my last hospital bill was $142K. Their contract with BCBS said BCBS would pay them $37K and I was not responsible for anything else (except $67 which completed my $5K deductible for the year).
People I've talked to in the heathcare biz say that if I had no insurance, the hospital would have been willing to charge me the $37K that they charge the insurance companies.
So WTF even create a $142K bill if there's no one who is going to be actually be paying that??!!

I got a bill for $20,053 for my surgery in October. Once it was adjusted for what BCBS paid I only had to pay $100. The amount agreed upon between BCBS and my surgery center was less than $4,000.
Folks who don't have insurance don't bother to ask for the "in network" rates. They just go bankrupt creating very nice write-off's for hospitals. I believe this is why the bills are as huge as they are. But what do I know?

You're probably right. Which makes me think they are also writing off the $105K that BCBS doesn't pay.
I still want to go by and pick up the pillow, gown and towels they charged me for. If I (or my insurance company) is going to pay for them, I should have possession!!
My total doctor bills from all 4 of my surgery's totals $3.6 million dollars (no shit)
I am out of pocket in 2006-2007 $12,500 in co pay's etc.
my insurance is $400 a month
I don't think people really appreciate insurance until they get an benefit from it, lol. Most of the people complaining are probably only "getting back" a fraction of what they spend every year so they think it's a ripoff. They need to LOOK AHEAD and realize that at any time you can be on the hook for hundreds of thousands and in your case millions, if you DON'T have insurance.
Hell, look at what you pay in car insurance over the years - how much of that do you really use? Homeowner's too. But people only enjoy complaining about health insurance for some reason.
I think I pay $105/mo for health and vision coverage for myself... but I have to pay the first $1000 or something like that myself. It's weird how it's setup. But I'm healthy, and they cover 2 checkup visits a year and 1 physical per year and just the $15 copay for the checkup and physical. Not too bad.
The health care system here in the states is all messed up anyway!
