The basis of the theory is the way the Earth keeps it's current climate is due to the currents of the oceans. The Gulf stream is just one of these ocean current that cools/warms our planet.
Essentially it's just a big conveyor belt that moves water around the oceans on our planet. The cold water from the arctics drops down deep in the ocean travels toward the equator and the warmer water stays at the surface and eventually circulates back to the arctics, where the whole process starts over again.
The basic idea is that if the ice caps all melt, it will stop this natural conveyor system which will stop the water from circulating and cause the oceans to get very cold spurring a other ice age. (that's the theory part)
Essentially global warming would create global cooling, if this theory plays out.

I see a lot of this on the Discovery Channel etc. They also say the continents will shift to make one large one etc. But none of this is going to happen in our lifetime.
