KYIV, July 16 - Ukrainian police have detained four people accused of killing a woman and dismembering her corpse, officials said Tuesday, while news reports said they were also suspected of cannibalism. One of the suspects lured the victim into a forest outside Zhytomyr, 140 kilometers (90 miles) south of the capital Kyiv, intending to take her keys and rob her house, said chief of Zhytomyr police Serhiy Nesterchuk. The victim was stabbed to death when she could not produce keys. The wife of the alleged killer and two male friends later helped dismember the body and take some of the parts home, Nesterchuk said.
The suspects allegedly ground up parts of the victim's body and ate them, even feeding some parts to a 4-year-old child, according to the Interfax news agency. Police arrested the suspects when they turned up at the victim's house several days later to demand dlrs 3,000 in ransom from her parents, according to Nesterchuk. Investigators discovered that the victim had been killed on June 26 and that suspects had eaten some of her body parts, according to Ukrainian television and news agency reports.
Police stopped short of confirming allegations of cannibalism. "On the issue of cannibalism, it is too early to say," Zhytomyr's chief prosecutor, Mykola Chernenko told a news conference. Officials have charged the suspects with murder, assault and robbery. They have also been implicated in another five other murders and some 20 cases of robbery and assault.
