    Who has a DVD burner?

I don't have one, but I was just thinking that it must take forever to burn like 4gb to a DVD, does it?

I own the Sony DRU500, it writes R- R+ and DVD RAM.
I have found that some people are able to open DVDs from it and some are not. It's like the old days with CD burners.. I sold 40 DVDs and almost everyone (even though I tested them on another DVD player) had some issue opening up a file, either a spin error or the file didn't play right. I'd say out of 400 files I had 60-75 files that older DVD players could not read.

As far as the record time, my old 2X burn in around 30 minutes.

As far as compatability, I have sold many thousands of dvd-r, and had maybe 3 returned. It is sort of a black art; you have to arrive at a combination of hardware and software that works on most old players, and stick with it.

It only takes 30 mins to burn a full DVD? I mean FULL, like 4.7gb

I have a Panisonic DVD-R, DVD-RAM burner (one for my Entertainment system - not computer). If you have ever seen the Panisonic commercials where you hit play on your (whatever you are recording from) and hit record on the DVD Burner - it is just that simple. It records/burns as you are watching. When you hit stop, it stops and you are ready to play.

Think of it like a VCR. It has inputs for 3 video sources via RCA cables and a Antenna-In Antenna-Out for recording from your cable system. However, chances are very good that you will not be able to copy DVD Movies as they are generally blocked at the source of the DVD player (Unless you have an older APEX that did not have the blocker on the DVD Player then you can record away). But even if you could record DVDs it only records in stereo so if you have 5.1 surround sound system, the DVD burner renders it useless on burnt DVDs.

I like the DVD-RAM part because they are just like blank VCR tapes. You can record up to 1000 times on the disk without losing quality. The only problem is DVD-RAM can only be played on other DVD-RAM compatible players. But if you are just recording <insert favorite show here> it is great. I also has VCR+ and timer record just like a VCR too so you can record when you are not at home.

                  I hear you.
Once they figure out what format to go with, things will become much easier.
Where do you buy your media and what type is it? I have an older burner that wouldn't see certain kinds of blank dvds

Some manufacturers had originally announced that DVD players would be on the market in the second quarter 1996, we didn?t see them until the end of November in Japan and in the U.S. until March 1977.

Yeah, March 1977 was a great year for DVD burners

It takes around one hour to burn DVD at 1st speed.
Drives now support 4th speed so it's not that much.

                        1st CD WRITE SPEED (150 kb/s)
                        1st DVD WRITE SPEED (1280kb/s)

Just buy one , a see for a model that writes both on DVD+R and DVD-R.

                          Hi,

It takes about 45 minutes to burn a full DVD using my internal Mac superdrive.

Use DVD-R, more compatable than the newer format. Use 1X-2X, not 4X.

For media I buy only Ritek 2X. I think for the Inkjet printable ones its about $250 per 200 dvds or something like that - I buy from some web outfit - http://www.genesysdtp.com

It also depends what hardware you write them on. You can master on anything, but when they are duplicated not all drives are created equally. I have about a dozen pioneer A104 2X burners, which rock.

With my HP 300i DVD Burner I Use this software to copy DVD's:
                                    http://www.dvdxcopy.net/?a=4603 DVDXCopy

(hurry they are trying to pull it.. law suits etc)

I can copy a DVD if it fits on one side in about 15-20min

And raw data to 4.7gig in about 30min, I don't do many
                                    of those.

The media is cheap to at a little more then a buck for 4gigs
                                    of space.

My DVD burner makes quite a few fucked up DVD's with errors. I don't trust my DVD data backups like I do with a CD.

Yes... that's for a full 4.7G... and they are getting even faster.

BTW... I have a Buslink [2.4x/2.4x/8x DVD+RW/+R---12x/10x/32x CDR/RW/CD=ROM] I bought last year at Best Buy for something like $299. With NERO, It works great! Never had a compatibilty problem with DVD players. It does CDR's too, but I have a faster CD Burner for doing CD's.

We've got a Panasonic dmr-e60 burner here and use it daily for recording shows on dvd-ram. Does a great job and quite reliable. I also use it for transfering old VHS tapes to DVD.
