I heard some fucked up things about some things that were said there. I would like to confirm this. Someone on the panel thinks that piracy is a joke apparently.

I was there for a portion. I heard nothing that upset me or hasn't been mentioned on GFY a dozen times.
There was one interesting discussion that I suppose someone might take wrong if they were not paying attention.
Think before there was television. Everyone went to the movies, then all of a sudden television came along and it was free. The motion picture industry must have been furious. Until they figured out that higher quality would still bring in the viewers.Comment

Then its their choice but using others sweat and blood without permission and then saying its user created content fuck them.I was there for a portion. i was told that Lars pretty much snubbed all the content producers in the industry by saying something to the effect that people need to adapt or die. so this led me to think, which drastically hurt my little peon brain. if no one can afford to produce content anymore, who will buy ads in AVN and XBIZ, who will pay for 25,000 dollar booths at the trade show. who will refuel the constant need for new content in niches that the people stealing the content aren't capable of producing even if they had the money to do it? who will sponsor all those fancy parties?
anyone who thinks this new "parasite" element that has attached itself to the online business is going to show up and start supporting this industry with the money that is deflected away at a higher level each week is dreaming. that money is gone and never coming back. adult sponsor programs, content producers, and ancillary companies that support these revenue generators are the ones supporting this industry. AFF, XTUBE, AEBN, RUDE.COM, BR***ERS (since they advertise here, i can't say their name or i'll piss off gfy), and more of those sleeping in the bed with us are already involved in one way or another with sites that generate revenue on stolen content. there are many more in the works right now. people are going to go to the dark side to keep up with the "evolution".
now, let's not be naive to think that those companies in the content business are not adapting or innovating. contrary to popular belief we are adapting and innovating at a pace that most are not going to be able to keep up with. you shall see soon what i mean. we are leaders not followers. evolution is a certainty and i don't intend to be left behind or sitting on the sidelines. monetizing the future is a definite for us, but you know what they say, if it don't make dollas, it don't make sense.
i'm basically pissed that the very people who are the so called "leaders" of this business can sit back and justify sites like megarotic that do nothing but detract from what everyone works for.
let's hope AFF can cover the entire ad revenue for both industry magazines when no one else can afford to buy ads anymore.
fuck, maybe i just have too many fucking morals for this business.

We are with you. There has always been a parasitic group in this business but it has grown exponentially in the last few years. I have written about it before and i really hope that by partnering with legitimate business people who are like minded we can weather the storm and come out in the end.
The cowboys of the early days double charging cards and looking for the quick buck did not make it in most cases and this will be no different.

So... If a content/paysite owner chooses to upload content to tubes, torrent, newsgroups, p2p, ect... That's a problem?
If doing this is dark or a problem, then creating fake member areas for password sites is or like most programs mailing ex-members that aren't really double-opt lists and really is illegal spam, is a problem.
That's one of those over looked moral issues, I guess.

well, if they CHOOSE to do it, then thats on them if they devalue their library by giving away 30 minute scenes. i can't name one that would upload 30 minute scenes.
as for your other items. they are not the topic of discussion. content theft is. it detracts from the industry and drains the lifeblood from it for everyone, not just content producers.
i'm not sure how mailing and fake members areas to fool password thieves is being associated with people stealing content.
i have no interest in what tactics people employ to generate their sales. (spam whatnot), thats on them. what i do care about is so called friends stealing from each other to make some extra cash.Comment

The only way you'll fight piracy is to stop doing business with anyone involved in it. IE if you have a bro who you trade cross sells with but he has AFF in his members area - stop your deal until he removes AFF.
Same goes for any other entities who deal with thieves. Do you know why nothing will be done? Because the scum have all the $.

This is my prediction for the future of the industry. Everyone goes tube crazy, free full length movies everywhere with the hope of ads paying for everything, throwing the web 2.0 term around.
Then governments around the world will start banning online porn because its just way too easy for kids to get access to it.Now there is a ton of free shit now but its not adult friendly. In tubes the non internet savy adult can see it all laid out easy as a click away. Then we as a industry will have the balls to say why are they picking on us? Bookmark thisComment

My point was you are fighting for something that a mixture of owners seem to care about and another group doesn't so much. If they upload it or not. You toss out friends doing illegal things/business, theft / piracy, whatever.. When I was only using the ex-members mailings an example of "friends" doing illegal business that you turn a blind eye to.
I think that's pretty on topic since people are talking about not doing business with companies that view piracy and the idea of it in a different light.
For me it's really easy, if a scene costs me $1k to make, but through the paysite, dvds, vod, magazines, my plugins and later sales to other sites. I make each scene make as much profit as possible. By time the pirates get it or that part of the net, I already made 10x net - so I use theft as layer of free promotion that acually does produce, even if it's on a small scale, it still adds profit.
Some sites do need to be taken down, some are bastard stealing asshats that don't care and ignore our take down requests. Anyone that allows or rips watermarks, or anyone trying to directly resell my content. So I don't support piracy, but I understand not all piracy is created equal.

i really am unclear on what you're getting at.
here is piracy.
1. person A creates intellectual property.
2. person b removes said property from person A's inventory without permission.
3. person B uploads person A's content to person C's website in most cases.
4. person C knowingly uses person A's content to make money with person D, who fucking for sure isn't person A's friend.
i'm still not grasping where you're going with mailing (which generates signups to paysites) and fake members areas to divert assholes that use stolen passwords. they should go to a black hole fucking cirlce jerk console chain to nowhere if i had my way about it.
i think you're grasping at the morality thing. if thats right, let me propose this.
when has the adult business ever been about morals? the issue is blatant theft within our circle is occurring. this is a disease inside our industry. this has nothing to do with getting the money from consumers. this is losing money to a parasitic entity supported by adult companies who sleep in the same bed as us.
anyway, i gotta get back to my programs, i just don't see how you're tying these things together to the same moor.
thanks.Comment

I will explain it another way... Piracy, and as you stated, is theft, which is illegal. So you don't want to support companies that support piracy, or that illegal activity.
Now, spam, a virus that slowly kills us all, and has statistically proven to do so, is fine because "you are making money from it". Well, it's still illegal to mail your ex members the way 99% mail them. Soooo... Companies are against piracy because it doesn't make them "direct income" but spam is ok? Pfft, it's all illegal.
Why do VOD sites not have a problem with tube/piracy, at all? Then why do you? So since we know the answers, why is piracy an issue with you when it's something "you" can control before it gets out of control?
If you can stop it, if you can control it, but you choose to not spend that money to protect your investments (like not getting an alarm or lock for your office) then it's not anyones problem but your own. You will NEVER stop piracy, you will NEVER take down tubes, torrents, news, ect.. So you can continue to yell, cry and scream or ... you can spend the money to protect yourself or.... learn to diversify your content so theft is just another profit margin.

The truth is that Tube sites are slowly replacing TGPs, well, maybe more quickly then we think.
Why would a surfer want to stare at a still picture when they can watch a 3 minute clip of a scene and really go to town on themselves with video footage? It was said in one of the seminars by Ynot Bob that "if it takes 5 minutes to jerkoff, give them 4 minutes of content....and thats the truth!
The piracy of content is really the issue that needs to be dealt with, but that goes with any area of this industry. If the owner of "X" Studio wishes to give away FREE video content, isn't that the same as giving a hosted gallery away? It's just evolved to video now...and now consumers can actually see what they are going to get when they join or buy that product.
Ultimately, content producers should cap the viewable clips to a certain time length so it keeps consumers wondering, without giving them the kitchen sink with the kitchen.
As more and more bigger players start seeing the value of tube sites, I think you will start seeing more of the piracy issues disappear as the bigger guys will learn to monetize this arena more accordingly.Comment
-
For anyone who doesn't have an activist agenda, the discussion was professional and fairly mundane.
Lars only comments about it could basically be summed up as "Like it or not, there is something happening, and the people with the money and the power to do things in this industry need to listen to the market and try and see what's really going on.. what is the market telling you.."
No one supports the idea of distributing illegal/stolen content, but everyone is aware that it does happen and that it is bad for business. However, "Tube style", flash-based free video sites aren't going anywhere though.. so everyone had better get used to it.
More can be done by talking about solutions rather than complaining about problems.I died.Comment

MEGAROTIC makes ALL of its money FROM STOLEN CONTENT from AFF pretty much. AFF knows they don't own any of that stuff.

Everyone is missing the point. We're all adapting, we're all innovating, we're all evolving. That's all fine and dandy. Will no one acknowledge the reality of what else is happening.
Fuck all with the adapting thing. Jesus, we are all adapting.
Why can't the leaders of this industry look at people who are doing this shit for the criminals they are?
