Language *IS* a foundation of culture. Otherwise put, a large part of a culture is it's language. They evolve together and neither would be the same without the other.

What you seem to be crying out for here is a stripping/dumbing down of all cultures to a form more easily digestible by someone with your (seemingly limited) education.

if you "agree that language is part of culture" then how can everyone "enjoy every culture to it's *full* extent" by enforcing that everyone on earth should "speak ONLY english"

languages die out every year. Currently there are about 6,000. It's believed that in 100 years 90% of them will be gone.

The idea we'll all be speaking one, or possibly two, languages is not far-fetched.

Certainly language is a part of culture but seriously think of all the work to remake the culture lost? Is Beavis and Butthead as funny in French as it is in English? I doubt it. But we could make a new Beavis and Butthead speaking French or whatever world wide language we pick. Poetry we could just let die out as people don't really like it anyways. Point being culture would simply change not die out.

The other benefits would be enormous as when the budhists are chanting you would be able to follow along or you could sing with opera as you would know the words. How cool would some of this be?

imagine going to japan and sitting in a room full of japanese and you all spoke the same language. how much more you would learn. it is easy to read it in a book but first hand expierience is unmatched.

it is called LANGUAGE BARRIER for a reason, you would be able to learn so much more about cultures and people through being able to communicate with them right from the get go.

I will try to explain without getting into the whole insulting thing.

The basic point is that different languages have different structures. This influences the way people think. For example, English language is more relaxed in grammar and structure, German is not. Have you been to Germany? Try driving with a german friend and making an illegal u-turn. Not only will you get bitched out but someone will probably write down your license plate and report you to the cops.

I wish it was as simple as having language to be only the barrier. If you'll remove a language, in a few generations you'll remove much of culture associated with it. I'm not saying it's a bad thing I'm just saying that this is what would happen.

You've never imagined a world where you can fly to any destination, get off the plane, and just be able to speak to anyone and be understood? As it stands now you take a world tour and have to fumble through 30 different translation tomes trying to tell the person behind the counter what you want in your coffee. Wouldn't it be great if they understood you?

No he means english. If you are Ausie, Canadian, British or American you each have different slang and culture but you can understand each other. This further proves that one language does not remove culture. It only creates the ability to communicate. It does not stop the ausies from eating vegimite or the candaians from saying eh.

This also the country without speed limits on some roads? You are over simplifying the relationship. Climate has to be as big or bigger factor than languge when it comes to the rigidness of a society.

being an American, I do not feel that our "culture" is all that important. I would think Chinese and Russians might fall into our boat too as they have had little of it over the last 100 years or so. The French speaking people would be allowed to keep their language obviously. No one would want to hear them whine about it.
