    He?s back (sorry I had to). It what was inevitable, Arnie has signed on for Terminator 5. Deadline tells us that Fast Five director Justin Lin and franchise icon Arnold Schwarzenegger are officially teaming up for Terminator 5. The rights package is going out to studios today and it will undoubtedly be picked up pretty quick. Universal, Sony, Lionsgate and CBS Films are all seriously considering the film and I?m sure we?ll hear more news on it shortly.

    Apparently Universal was trying to get Lin on board for the film a while ago but he wasn?t a bankable name yet. But now with Fast Five (which is doing well overseas and will open strongly here this week), Lin is an acceptable name. The franchise is also facing a ticking clock as James Cameron gets the rights back in 2018, so if the plan for the franchise (which is calling for a Terminator 5 and 6), goes beyond 2018, Cameron will likely have to get involved again.

    That being said, 2018 is still a ways away and they have enough time to squeeze out a fifth and sixth film. Furthermore, Deadline tells us that the ?project price tag is at least $25 million upfront, against a purchase price near $36 million, not including paydays for Schwarzenegger or Lin.?

    I like the Terminator franchise. Number 3 and 4 weren?t great but the series as a whole is still an enjoyable experience. It will be awesome to see Schwarzenegger back in the role that turned him into one of Hollywood?s biggest movie stars and I?m very interested to see what direction they take the series in.

                                                  It'll work! Here's why.

                                                  Arnie IS, the Terminator. No arguments. Always will be. Most of Arnie's other non-terminator movies pretty much sucked. You have to be a real arnie fan to like his other movies, which I am not, which is why I won't be paying to see Last Stand. I saw the previews, and it looks just like any other crash bang boom movie. Meh.

                                                  But Terminator 5 will be different. Even through James Cameron has leased the rights out and doesn't get them back until 2018, it looks like he is on board to write it and maybe produce it. If he's involved it has to be good because well first, he's good, and second because he can now begin to build-up the brand. There is time to make 2 Terminator movies before he owns it again in 2018.

                                                  Next, Terminator 1,2 and 3 were all excellent movies (I LOVED T3 - wow). Terminator 4 sucked for lots of reasons, mainly director McG is an idiot, the story was weak, it was no fun, and had 2 seconds of arnie.

                                                  What I think they might do for Terminator 5, is build on Arnie's OTHER character - Major whats-his-name, in the T2 or T3 Featurette. Yes it was played for laughs, but the hint is that the Terminator robots were all made to look like "someone", so why not have an old arnie-played character that the "young" Terminators are based on? It makes sense.

                                                  Yes Arnie's old, but so what. I would love to see him in another Terminator movie or 2, and would especially love to see a new Terminator movie written, produced and directed by James Cameron. I've seen all the Terminator movies dozens of times, but I've seen Avatar only once.

                                                                          I'm a big Arny fan. Total Recall, anyone? That movie rocked. The original, not the shitty remake with Colin Farrell. Predator is another classic and let's not forget the awesomely bad Commando. Twins was excellent as well. Speaking of which, they're supposedly making a sequel to that with Eddie Murphy and I fully expect it to suck.

                                                                          I don't know how they're going to pull off a new Terminator with Arnold being so old now, though. Should be interesting.

The Korean director made a couple of my favorite movies of the last couple years -- "The Good the Bad The Weird" and "I saw The Devil" -- but that's all it had going for it.
