I have found that some people are able to open DVDs from it and some are not. It's like the old days with CD burners.. I sold 40 DVDs and almost everyone (even though I tested them on another DVD player) had some issue opening up a file, either a spin error or the file didn't play right. As far as the record time, my old 2X burn in around 30 minutes.
As far as compatability, I have sold many thousands of dvd-r, and had maybe 3 returned. It is sort of a black art; you have to arrive at a combination of hardware and software that works on most old players, and stick with it.
