I'd say out of 400 files I had 60-75 files that older DVD players could not read.
As far as the record time, my old 2X burn in around 30 minutes.

As far as compatability, I have sold many thousands of dvd-r, and had maybe 3 returned. It is sort of a black art; you have to arrive at a combination of hardware and software that works on most old players, and stick with it.
