I know a lot of people in this business have moved overseas to places ranging from South America to Thailand... just wondering where the best places to move are, and why? (standard of living, crime, etc)

The problem with living abroad while earning USD is that you live and die by the USD unless you also create a local business where you earn their currency. In the event the dollar goes tits up, everyone is ass out.
A lot of ex-pats are in Thailand, Costa Rica, Argentina, Colombia, Brazil, Hong Kong, Singapore, Cambodia, Malaysia, Panama, parts of Mexico, and so on. Ex-pats are everywhere. Just gotta find a place you like enough to live there and is easy enough with their visa restrictions.Comment

Not sure about Ecuador but Panama uses USD, along with a handful of other countries. Most will also have a local currency as well.
Any country who uses the USD along with their own currency use it just like you do at home. If something cost $3, it cost $3. Very easy.Comment

So much to consider and depend on your circumstances. Just try some counries for a few months. There are lots of places with high rime rates in the USA also. So what is high? Brazil has high crime rates, but not everywhere.

Been to Panama many times and I'm completely moving the whole family there this year.
Love it there. Low crime, low cost of living, great schools, great medical, low taxes, low business regulation, big variety of restaurants due to the wide variety of cultures living there, Ease of getting residency, (especially under the new executive order #343), etc... Throw in the fact that I have a lot of friends there, both expat US and EU people, as well as Panamanians, and it makes it a winner for my family.
Certainly not perfect by any means, but no place is.

Very expensive to live there i hear, with a decent place to live costing you $1-2 million. It's also a terrible place to go as a young person, trying to build a career, since Hawaii is detached from the global economy. Its main industry is tourism. It's not a great place for ambitious people to get white collar jobs, or become millionaires.

I agree with this. While I have not ventured out of the US, it's something that is discussed in my household frequently. And we'd like to try a few different places to see how we like it.
Enjoying a one or two week vacation without kids on a tropical island is very different than every day life that one is custom to here. ie: Grocery stores, things being open on Sunday, etc.Comment

although these articles state the best places to "retire", you can also read into them as the best places to live overseas inexpensively. my BF and I are sick of the high cost of living in the U.S. he can fly free anywhere (airline job, but flying overseas there are some fees and tariffs), so we're planning to check out some places outside the U.S. this year. Ecuador is on the list.

Yes. I have a son. (That's why I mentioned the schools).
Pretty much all schools are private in Panama. Some actually follow the US and UK systems in terms of curriculum and schedule. Because there is a lot of competition, the prices and quality are better than in the US, (and better than Canada, according to Canadian friends that moved there several years ago)
