Drinking Diet Soda Linked to Depression

Calorie-free drinks are not necessarily risk free. A new study has found a link between drinking diet soda or diet fruit drinks and an increased risk of depression.

The study researchers analyzed information from more than 263,900 U.S. adults ages 50 to 71 who answered questions about their beverage consumption between the years 1995 and 1996. About 10 years later (from 2004 to 2006), the same people were asked if a doctor had diagnosed them with depression since the year 2000.

People who regularly drank four or more cans of any type of soda a day were 30 percent more likely to have received a diagnosis of depression than people who did not drink soda. The risk of depression was especially high for people who drank diet soda ? a 31 percent increased risk compared to a 22 percent increased risk for those who drank regular soda, the researchers said.

Those who drank four or more cans of diet fruit drinks were 51 percent more likely to be diagnosed with depression compared to those who did not drink diet fruit drinks.

Possibly those who are depressed over things such as their weight are more likely to drink diet drinks rather than diet drinks causing depression. ;)

Depression diagnosis's are probably up just as much.

You cannot turn on the TV or radio without hearing about depression and so and so can fix it.

Who is drinking four cans of cola a day? Wow. I'd bet being a lethargic fat ass is probably the real reason they are depressed.

who doesn't drink the equivalent of 4 cans of some beverage a day? Beer, juice, soda, tea, coffee - unless you are a water drinker which is the healthiest thing to be but I drink water only to quench thirst, water is boring.

what i don't understand is how people drink 10 cans of beer in a night - i can't drink 10 cans of water or orange juice or soda.

most of the studies are so dumb - amongst people who drink diet soda is a large % who are obese and no doubt not happy about it, so that explains some of that depression. and the same goes for the regular sugar drinks. people with their shit together have self discipline - they don't become fast food junkies, alcoholics, potheads etc

they don't have to pay me to do a study - i'll just make some up and my study results will be just as valid.

Drinking any amount of diet soda may induce full on suicide with me.

Shit is nasty. I have no idea how people drink it.

It's all fucking garbage. Diet OR regular. Stay away from that shit. Even if it doesn't give you depression, it can (and usually does) give you a fat ass, rotten teeth, and other health problems.

                                          Many people.

One can of soda is 12 oz.. One large McDonald's pop (as an example) is 32 oz.. Do the math. That is ONE drink, at possibly ONE meal, in a 12-18 hour day. How many additional drinks throughout the day do you believe the average person will have?

Because it's very, very addictive. The rush I get from a cold glass of coke is something I can't explain. It lasts only a second or two, but it is very powerful.

Four cans of diet soda a day?

I drink a liter or so of seltzer a day, but that's just carbonated water. No harm there.

Aspartame is lethal in concentrated doses, so watch out. You may be poisoning your brain.

I would still rather drink diet soda than regular. SO much high fructose corn syrup in that garbage, it disgusts me.

this study is as worthless as the last study they did on it claiming it causes obesity and heart disease. It's open without consideration to the lifestyles they are living. Is the average person in that study eating a proper amount of vegetables? Are they getting a responsible amount of exercise? Do they eat peanut butter? There's about a billion variables that can skew results like these which completely makes them worthless and nothing more than a flash in the pan story filled with pseudo scientific results.

The truth is aspartame is the most heavily tested additive in history and they have yet to find any repeated results that would prove there is any harm caused from it. That being said anyone who consumes too much of anything that chemical heavy is probably not on the right track to being healthy in the first place.

In the book, a film maker makes a movie that is so enjoyable that people cannot stop watching it. It's not physically addictive like heroin, but the viewers derive so much pleasure from the film they simply cannot turn it off.

Potato chips and ring dings may not cause an actual physical addiction, but the pleasure some people get from junk food can develop into a mental addiction, for sure.

If on the other hand we are told that something is bad for us people are much more willing to accept it as fact.
