The dems caucus don't mean squat. I don't like how they do it . Now whats scary is Romeny placed second for the Republicans. Also im surprised Paul got as many votes as he did in Iowa.
But this whole thing is far from over so it will get interesting in time.....Icq 247-742-205Comment

Edwards. Polls have shown he's the ONLY dem candidate that beats ALL top 5 GOP contenders. Dems are to stupid to vote for a winner. GOP fucked up in 2000 when the voted for Bush instead of McCain.Comment
-
This is the first primary. there are 49 more still to go. The polls show huckabee not doing nearly was well in the more progressive states so I really doubt he is going to win the nomination. More likely it will be Rudy or Mit. The same goes with the dems. The people in Iowa are not big Clinton fans and he didn't beat either hillary or edwards by much.
We will now a little more over the next couple of weeks and on Feb 5th which is super tuesday around 20 states will have their primaries. At the end of that day we will know who the real contenders are and who just got lucky.Comment
-
And Obama is from Illinois which is right next door. Don't you think that had something to do with the way the voting turned out? Don't act like Obama blew this thing away. 62% of Iowa voters did NOT vote for the "winner". Not exactly a ringing endorsement.Comment

You dont think Obama can beat Huckabee??
I think he can. Im glad Obama won today. Its sends a very strong message.

This was no primary. It's a caucus and the way the Dems run it is pretty much like a circus. This is the first primary. there are 49 more still to go. No one should read too much into the results of this caucus.Comment

As I watched his speech tonight and the breakdown of the numbers by the analysts I thought of JFK & RFK. Youth and women chose him by a wide margin.
I hope he doesn't suffer the Kennedy's fate. That would be cataclysmic for the country.Comment

Obviously you don't know much about his political agenda if you think it's radical.
He's the one candidate that is openly willing to work with the other side, and he catches hell for that within his own party.
Hillary says she's ready to fight a war with the republicans in the fall, Edwards wants to beat up the corporations in favor of their employees, and Obama wants to sit down with everyone, have each side concede a little bit, so that we can move forward on things.
Yet you think he's the radical one?sig too bigComment

Props to George Bush for giving him secret service protection as soon as he announced his candidacy. (One of the very few things I can give Dubya props for)sig too bigComment

I think if something happened to him at this point... it would pretty much mean the end for America as the super power for sure
... the effects would shockwave across the world for yearsComment
-
No.
There must have been 20 candidates from both parties running at that time, each of them didn't have a secret service detail. At that time it was only Obama and Hillary, and Hillary had hers as a former first lady, not because she was a candidate.
I'm not sure of the specific rules for candidates, but I do remember reading in the news that the administration wasn't required to give him protection, but thought it was the prudent thing to do.sig too bigComment

Arthur Bremer, Squeaky Fromme, Sara Jane Moore and John Hinckley, Jr. ring any bells?
As a result of Sirhan B. Sirhan's assassination of Bobby Kennedy major presidential candidates are given Secret Service protection.
Only Sirhan was successful, but Hinckley was close, so protection is not a guarantee of safety.Comment

Huckabee is the one person I can think of right now that would actually be worse for the country than what we have now. The fact that the evangelicals turned his numbers from single digits to front runner in even one state makes my blood run cold. Anyone see "Jesus Camp"?Comment

Fromme, Moore and Hinkley tried to kill actual president not candidates. Moore just got released from prison earlier this week by the way.Comment

The following section of the US Code tasks the US Secret Service with providing protective services to the President, Vice President, major candidates for those offices, and the families of those persons.
Title 18, Crimes and Criminal Procedures
Sec. 3056. Powers, authorities, and duties of United States Secret Service
* (a) Under the direction of the Secretary of the Treasury, the United States Secret Service is authorized to protect the following persons:
o (1) The President, the Vice President (or other officer next in
the order of succession to the Office of President), the
President-elect, and the Vice President-elect.
o (2) The immediate families of those individuals listed in
paragraph (1).
o (3) Former Presidents and their spouses for their lifetimes,
except that protection of a spouse shall terminate in the event
of remarriage unless the former President did not serve as
President prior to January 1, 1997, in which case, former
Presidents and their spouses for a period of not more than ten
years from the date a former President leaves office, except that
-
+ (A) protection of a spouse shall terminate in the event of
remarriage or the divorce from, or death of a former President;
and
(B) should the death of a President occur while in office or
within one year after leaving office, the spouse shall receive
protection for one year from the time of such death:
Provided, That the Secretary of the Treasury shall have the
authority to direct the Secret Service to provide temporary
protection for any of these individuals at any time if the
Secretary of the Treasury or designee determines that information
or conditions warrant such protection.
o (4) Children of a former President who are under 16 years of
age for a period not to exceed ten years or upon the child
becoming 16 years of age, whichever comes first.
o (5) Visiting heads of foreign states or foreign governments.
o (6) Other distinguished foreign visitors to the United States
and official representatives of the United States performing
special missions abroad when the President directs that such
protection be provided.
o (7) Major Presidential and Vice Presidential candidates and,
within 120 days of the general Presidential election, the spouses
of such candidates. As used in this paragraph, the term ''major
Presidential and Vice Presidential candidates'' means those
individuals identified as such by the Secretary of the Treasury
after consultation with an advisory committee consisting of the
Speaker of the House of Representatives, the minority leader of
the House of Representatives, the majority and minority leaders
of the Senate, and one additional member selected by the other
members of the committee. The protection authorized in paragraphs (2) through (7) may be declined.Comment

Yes. But, the point I was trying to make is that even with Secret Service protection there is a danger - for the President and candidates alike.Comment

Go Obama!
He may be the first black man in history to guarantee a Republican victory.Comment

Obama supporters are voting for a dream. He provides good lip service, but at this stage his presidency would have to be considered unpredictable. Obama is a high risk, possibly high reward candidate.
I think Obama has taken a page out of the Republican playbook and is getting supporters who just want to feel good inside about who they vote for. So far it's working very well for him.
I think Edwards should have been run in 2004 vs. Bush instead of Kerry. That was his chance, and now it has come and gone.
Hillary is not her own woman. If she is going to win the nomination it will be on the back of Bill Clinton. My gut feeling is that he can let the air out of Obama at any time. The question is, when will he step out from the shadows and start campaigning for Hillary?Comment

As it stands right now, you really think Huckabee is GUARANTEED victory over Obama?
All Democrats would go for Obama, but Huckabee would have only MOST Republicans. Of independents I think a strong majority vote for Obama, giving him the election by a pretty good margin.Comment

Listen to his speech and tell me he doesn't have a chance... I'll be the first to admit I wasn't sure, I was leaning towards Clinton/Obama but after hearing him last night and part of his speech during the CNN Oprah coverage, I think he's gonna take it. I just spent some time at his site as well as Clinton.
