Because when you're a cop at a crime scene with dead bodies everywhere and you see somebody fleeing the scene it kinda makes sense to go follow/chase that person down.

weird, it's not strange they pursued this guy but a google search just leads to a lot of people asking who he was and what he was doing and it doesn't seem like the police ever made a statement about him.

i found people saying he was a guy out in the woods chopping wood.

The breaking news was so bad and misleading. At first they said they found the rifle in the car he drove to the school, But yet everyone was shot with the rifle. Also he went in with two fully loaded handguns with extra ammo and only used it to kill himself.
