They usually come in as "Demos" and the artist just sings exactly as the demo tells him/her to sing.Ester Dean writes all of Rihanna's songs that the record company forces her to take...for example. You can find most of Dean's demos for Rihanna on YouTube.
Record companies like Arista (and many others) are notoriously known for having this shit stipulated in their contracts.
The artist has no choice...if they want a deal.
