As we all know, a big part of Google's PageRank is how many one-way inbound links you have on other websites aimed at your site that do not have rel="nofollow" on them. Does this practice of Google's leave us with an Internet devoid of true content and instead with 50 billion pages of spam all jockeying for position?

- You see cool site linking to you.
- You check it out.
- You like it.
- You link back to it.

- You check to see if they have rel="nofollow" on the link.
- If they do, you might link them since you ain't getting no page rank anyway. But more likely, you get mad that they 'cheated' you out of PageRank, so you don't link them.
- If they don't, you don't link them (unless they ask) because then you nullify the benefit of the PR being passed to you. And you hope that your link stays up.
- Either way, your visitors never see the most relevant content, because usually sites that link to you without you asking are very similar to yours.
- The only links on your site are to your other sites, sites you have been paid to link to (both of which are probably a spam scheme to increase your PR and/or get rich) or sites that don't link to you.
