Having spent a few years not too long ago buying storage units and selling the stuff in them I can tell you that the show is clearly fake.
I don't know about them putting stuff of value in the units, but I had read that the stars of the show are encouraged to overbid in order to make sure they get the unit.
If you watch the show you will notice as bidding starts there are often several bidders, but as the amount goes up it always ends up being just between the stars of the show and nobody else bidding. They are likely being reimbursed for overbidding on the units.
As for Hester, he was being sued by a few different people who say he ripped them off and I know during season 2 he demanded a raise because he felt he was the star of the show and he held out (which is why he wasn't in several episodes).
His businesses have been hurting so he probably tried to get another raise and when he couldn't and got fired he is making another money grab at them.
