I guess that's fine if your running a network of sites you don't give a fuck about. But if it's a singular project that you want to have some longevity, then yeah, it's a stupid idea. I mean it's even questionable just how much emphasis Google puts on back links, if they do at all. I had one site that I made sure the code was clean and fast, used the basic good practices, and within 8-12 months it was at the top for all my desired keywords. Not a single back link was created. And there were some pretty big keywords in there (mainstream).
